Default AVI files play no picture, but with sound

On one of the files I wont to play I used gspot and there seems to be a
problem with WMV2 WMP v8 Microsoft.

Is there anyway to sort this out?

Actually there is a place to tell you if you need codecs...

Right-click on the player's playlist on the partially failing track
and click Error Details. Then click Web Help. That should identify
any missing codec (John/I did this part) and then offer to take you to
wmplugins where you can probably find the codec (Kevin L did most of
that).

Automating this process would kind of be dangerous since a lot of
codecs are dodgy. =\

I did have Xvid (older version 1.1.2).

There is nothing there in media player to tell me that I need

I did have all the codec's on my system before and they played
alright?

WMP probably can't find the correct codec. Besides the media title
in the right frame of WMP there should be a small, red icon. Click
it, and follow the instructions to download the right codec.

I've seen this problem several times with Xvid, it could be what
you're missing.

ffdshow.ax is a third party filter that can override standard settings, not
necesssarily for the best.

The AVI issue confuses this. What is your specific error from what specific
AVIs there?

To clarify, did the ASX I pointed you to work when directly opened from
WMP's Open URL option?
Do local WMV files still play correctly?

System restore is a good feature. =\

Zach that is one of the files I was trying to play. Most of the other
files are AVI files.
I have a feeling that there is a problem with media player.
I would restore my system, but I can not as I have the restore turned off
(I am not very happy once when using the restore and as such I have
turned it off).

Right-click on the player's playlist on the partially failing trackand

Try downloading an installing this codec pack: 'Vista Codec Package
Homepage' (http://shark007.testbox.dk/)

Some people may say that you shouldn't us codec "packs", but I've been
using this one for almost a year now and have had no issues. It only
contains what is absolutely necessary. It also comes in a x64 version
(which is what I'm using)

Default AVI files play no picture, but with sound

Thanks for your reply dzomlija, but I now have a feeling that there is a
problem with media player. I have all the codecs that should be needed to
play the files that I want playing. The files I want to play used to play
alright before. I think that when my computer crashed on me and I used
chkdsk to check c: something went wrong with media player.

What I need to find out now is there a way of repairing media player.

Thanks again.

The problem is definitely with media player. I tried the same video's that
would not play right in media player in media center and they played alright
and without any problems?

ffdshow.ax is a third party filter that can override standard settings,
not necesssarily for the best.

The AVI issue confuses this. What is your specific error from what
specific AVIs there?

To clarify, did the ASX I pointed you to work when directly opened from
WMP's Open URL option?
Do local WMV files still play correctly?

System restore is a good feature. =\

Try this:

- Open an Elevated Command Prompt ("Start"-"All
Programs"-"Accessories"-"Command Prompt", Right-click, "Run As
Administrator"
- In Command Prompt, type *SFC /scannow*
- If there are any problems with Media Player, then the System File
Checker will show itYou never mentioned which version of Vista you are using? Vista x86 (32
Bit) or Vista x64? If you're using Vista x64, and the 64-Bit WMP, then
you may experience these sysmptoms if you only have 32-Bit codecs
installed.

You can check which WMP is being used by opening it, then by pressing
CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Task Manager. Go to Process in the Task Manager.
if WMPLAYER.EXE is listed with "* 32", then you are using the 32-Bit
version. If not, then its the 64-Bit version.
