Hi,

I'm trying to network a Vista Ultimate computer and a WinXP Pro SP2. I'm
running Windows Firewall and Norton Antivirus on the XP machine and Norton
Internet Security (NIS) on the Vista machine. I added the XP's IP address to
NIS, allowing inbound and outbound access, specifically opening ports 137,
138, 139 and 445 as per several articles I've read. I turned on all sharing
options on Vista except for Sharing Public Folders. XP can see Vista and
access its shared folders. The reverse is not so: Vista cannot even see XP at
all, let alone access its shared folders. I can ping XP from Vista via the
Command Prompt window, but cannot access it by typing its IP address into the
address field in IE or Explorer. The XP machine is also visible and
accessible from other XP, 2000 and Win98 machines. What else can I check?

Turn on Network discivery in vista; set the network to private; AND turn on
Public folder sharing(XP's old shared docs folder!)

Thanks, Mick. I had the first two suggestions already done. As for the third
one, doesn't this open my Vista system for more exposure that I want?
Remember, XP has no problem seeing Vista's shared folders, which are password
protected. The problem is going in the other direction. Is there a
configuration setting on the XP side that would open it up to Vista, bearing
in mind that only persons with an account on the XP machine would be able to
access its shared fodlers?

Have a read of the above link.

In Vista, you can remove the shares on the folders, and just copy what you
want shared from Vista's Docs into Vista's "Public" folder. That way, all
your info in vista's documents is protected.
We all set them up the way we like them!

The other thing; have you run the XP Set up a home Network file and printer
sharing wizard while both comps are turned on?

That way XP will share with vista.

Hi Mick,

I think I've partially resolved the issue.I had to open ports 137, 138, 139
and 445 as per another article I read, for specific communication with the XP
computer. Initially, Vista could still not see XP. However, when I typed
\\XP Computer\XP Share Name in the address bar in Windows Explorer, the
shares on the XP machine all appeared. It took about 15 mins before that was
successful, though.

The solution is not complete, however. Shared folders on XP are now visible
to Vista. However, I'm also sharing the CD/RW, DVD and USB drive on XP. These
are visble but not accessible (access denied), even though the shares have
the same permissions as other shared folders on XP. Any thoughts on this?
