Default Remote Assistance quits working

I have two friends to whom I provide help through Remote Assistance
session, but for the past couple of days Remote Assistance connection
fails with both of them.

I accept the request and then wait a while then a screen display popped
up says to the effect that the requester failed to respond. This is
because there is no new event takes place by which my friend to respond
to. The abve is when my friend is using WXP. If Windows Vistas are being
used at both ends then the process goes as follows:
I accept the request, my friend responds to it and inform me by phone of
the password, I type in the password then I wait and wait. My friend is
eventually notified that connection failed.

I have been using Remote Assistance for many years and thus it is hard
for me to believe there is anything wrong with our PC system. Remote
Assistance is still working within the local network. Is there anyone
experiencing the same problem?

I am afraid that I do not understand what this mean. Could you clarify
the above statement?

We all are using Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows XP Professional.
