network these two?

Yes, you should be able to just fine. In fact, once both are connected to
the router, the computers should 'see' each other just fine when browsing the
network. You might want to make sure the work groups are the same.

If you have any trouble, let us know what you're trying to do (share files
or folder, stream music or media between the two computers, etc).

file sharing is diff between vista and XP.

Make sure both comps have SAME workgroup name.
In vista Network and Sharing
File sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
Network discovery ON
Network Private
password protected OFF; unless you want to be prompted for a password
everytime you try and access Vista from XP

And, run the XP Home wizard for file and printer sharing with both comps
turned on

I need some urgent help. I have a wired connection from my windows XP
computer to a broadband router, and a wireless connection from my Vista
computer to this same router. I've had local and internet connections for a
many weeks. There was no encryption security or anything, but I didn't mind.
Suddenly I got disconnected from the router and now it's suddenly encrypted
with WEP and a network security key which I don't know!

What do I do? I really want my internet back (i'm using my XP computer which
does have internet).

Herman, unless you are trying to connect wirelessly to another SSID
with the same name as yours (this happens when people don't change
the name from the default), the router should be reset to factory
defaults using instructions from the vendor. there is usually a
reset hold where you insert a paper clip and hold for 10-15 seconds
or more or a reset button.

now, after the reset, before you attach the router to the modem,
login and change the password for the router itself. then, log in
and change the security to WPA2 or at least WPA and use a strong
passphrase.

if someone had access to your router wirelessly and changed the
settings, they also could have had access to shared files on your
computers, etc.

Hi,

Some one has changed your router settings. Reset your router to factory
default settings and change default admin password. Secure your network with
WPA or WEP.

You could be seeing another router (not yours).

Okay, i've reset my router (thanks for telling me this, I had no clue that
there was even a reset button). The thing is, every time I try to secure my
network, no matter which type of encryption or security, it disconnects me
from my own network and I can't connect again, because it says that my
computer settings don't match the settings of my router.
