I've been trying on and off for the last month or so to connect our new vista
laptop to an existing multiple xp computers network, so we can use the same printer and share files. Where can I find a step by step guide to see what I'm missing and to try to do it in an organized fashion. The XP computers are so easy to hook up that I didn't really have to pay attention while doing it. I think I downloaded a fix for the xp computer that holds the printer and shared files but it didn't work. Here is the xp computer info that contains our printer and shared files that we all sha Microsoft windows XP home edition version 2002 service pack 2, eMachines T5026 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz, 3.07 GHz, 504 MB of RAM, Computer description: Diana's Computer, Computer name: Diana, workgroup: MSHOME. All the xp computers in our family connected this computer with no problem in a period of a couple of years. Brand new Vista computer info: 2 users; both will need to access shared files and print from computer. (direct connection to computer will print but we want to print wireless like all the other computers do.) Windows Vista Home Premium copyright 2006 microsoft corporation, Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6000 (RP168UA#apa) AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 1.8 GHz processor, 1982 MB RAM, 32-bit operating system. Computer name, full computer name and description is TEAH-PC, windows is activated, Thanks for your help in directing me to a step by step guide to connect our vista computer to our existing multiple xp computers network |

The above is Microsoft's Vista printer and file sharing link. As you will read: Make sure all comps have the same workgroup name. In vista Network and sharing Network discovery ON Network set to private file sharing ON Public folder sharing ON (publicfolde in vista is old shared docs in XP If you don't turn off Password Protected sharing in the above vista Networking and sharing, every time you try ansd accrss vista from xp, you will be asked for a username and password.you can set that up by creating identical accounts on all your machines!!!!! at the end of all the above, with all comps hooked up and running, run the XP home network wizard to set up file and printer sharing to include vista. Chuck, I really appreciate your help and am continue to work through your
suggestions. So far I've managed to get the Vista computer to SharedDocs on the XP computer but not vice versa. Even though I can see the shared network printer on the XP computer, the vista computer comes up with an error message "windows cannot connect to printer, access is denied" which is very strange because I can print from another XP computer using this shared xp network printer. At this point the vista computer will not allow the other user without admin privileges to turn on network discovery even when I type in the main user's password. But I haven't quite finished trying everything yet. I think the following things may have helped: Turn off norton firewall and turn on windows firewall so network discovery is not blocked. Be patient and allow 15 minutes for vista computer to find xp computer. Turn off password protected sharing since it is a private network. Workgroup names were already the same. Be patient and allow 15 minutes for vista computer to find xp computer. Turn off password protected sharing since it is a private network. Workgroup names were already the same. What you're describing is a browsing problem (the "browser" is what lets the computers "see" one another), and is typically caused by, you guessed it, a personal firewall problem. If you have 2 personal firewalls, you have to choose 1. Running 2 personal firewalls is a sure way to have a browser problem, and more. The "15 minute" wait time is symptomatic of a browser synchronisation period. Read more about the browser, if you care. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...lways-see.html Password Protected Sharing (disabled) is the same as Simple File Sharing (enabled) under Windows XP. Turning that off or on simply allows you (requires you) to use a Guest or non-Guest account for sharing. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...xp.html#Simple -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
