Default ad hoc computer to computer wireless network

I am having a real problem connecting my desktop and laptop.

Both computers will connect to other wireless routers.

I can set up an ad hoc connection on both computers, but which ever way I
set it up the other computer won't connect. Both computers can see the
network that I have set up on the other but neither will connect.

My desktop will only allow WEP security so I use that on both computers. I
have noticed that when I check properties the password seems to change from
the 5 letter one I entered initially to an undisclosed 8 letter one. I don't
know if this is the problem.

When I try to connect the second computer, the first says 'waiting for other
users to connect'. This never seems to recognise that the second computer is
connecting. The second computer attempts to connect but either displays
'limited connectivity' or won't connect at all.

I have set file sharing, etc to 'on' on both computers. I think these
settings are OK as both will connect and share files over a Bluetooth
connection.

I can't work it out. It appears to be a straightforward facility but it
just doesn't work.

Any ideas?
