I recently installed Nuance PaperPort 11 for Vista onto my computer. I also
installed the Vista drivers for my HP ScanJet 5590. I should be able to assign the five buttons on the front of the 5590 using the Events tab on the Scanners and Cameras Control Panel applet in Vista to launch PaperPort from any of those buttons. I should then be able to assign particular scan profiles for each of those buttons from the Oprions/Buttons menus in PaperPort. The latter cannot be done without the former! However, when I attempt to change the Action on the Event menu in the Control Panel applet, I receive an "Event registration failed" error that states, "The attempt to change the registered event handler failed. Please make sure the device is turned on and connected properly." The device is turned on and connected properly and functions. I have attached a snip of the error and screens to this message. If someone has experienced this and has a solution, please reply. Thanks! |

Ok really old thread.. but i've searched the internets.. and never did find the answer posted anywhere. Found 1/2 the answer posted in the x64 section.. so I figured I'd finish the answer.. so it's available to the internets from this thread 'Scanner Event Registration Error - Vista Forums' (http://tinyurl.com/48b7ya) It has to do with the permissions. I don't know why that guy's didn't work I think maybe because the handler for the scanner is not necessarily just in that software folder.. but I went and did this runregedit HKEY_Current_User\ Right click that folder Choose Administrator then the Advanced button on the window that pops up Then I changed it for Administrator, and my regular username.. I'm the administrator.. but they're listed separate, so whatever... Anway so for administrator: runregedit HKEY_Current_User\ Click Administrator Click advanced After you've clicked Advanced, click Administrator from the list, then edit Then select all the boxes in there on the left. full control, query value, etc. Then hit ok Then.. muy importante... At the bottom of that screen check that box that says replace all existing inheritable permissions on all descendants with permissions from this object. Now I have no idea if that's something very horrible to do.. It may make your registry vulnerable to mistakes or something. I also did the same thing for my regular user name users\my name.. just for kicks I rebooted for good measure.. and then I went to control panelscanner and tried to set the handler again for when I press the scan button (I wanted it to run the software that came with my scanner) and it works... no errors. Hopefully it works for someone.. and the internet is now a more comprehensive tech support solution ![]() -- jenny123 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I don't know if it helped.. but sometimes it does because instead of just not letting you do things, it just gives you a dialog then lets you. I like it off, so after I did all this I turned it off again. -- jenny123 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
