Upgrade scenario with my relatively new (i.e. "off the shelf") Dell XPS 600
with the RC1 32 bit client... Error message is: You must make the following changes before installing Windows Close Windows installation and contact the device manufacturer for updated driver software for these devices: o SCSI and RAID controllers: Maxtor 7L250S0 o SCSI and RAID controllers: NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA RAID Controller The problem is two-fold: 1) There is no such part number listed on the Maxtor site and they have no Vista drivers available regardless (at least that I could find); 2) I downloaded the Nvidia Vista RC1 drivers, but the instructions state that I need to update to the drivers once Vista is installed - and there is no option to continue the install... Please note that I am not particularly technical, so probably a good test for how a consumer would encounter Vista, and I'm not sure what to do or where to turn... I've read a bunch of the posts on the problems with the NVIDIA nForce4 chipset and Vista, but most are well over my head - just having trouble understanding how this can be an RC build and still have these problems, so wanted to post to give visibility and to see if someone can help resolve...especially the Maxtor mystery... |

Did you find a solution for the Maxtor driver? I have the same problem upgrading Business edition of Vista. No info from Dell, no info from Maxtor.

Unfortunately, no - I wasn't able to upgrade with RC1 - and just resigned
myself that I would have to wait for the final release and then do a clean install. Discouraging that you are experiencing the same thing with final bits! Let me know if you find a solution... Just wanted to update this for the record. I went through the same process
with a retail copy of Vista and hit the same roadblock as above when going through the Upgrade route. However, after checking again on the Maxtor site, I decided to do a "Custom" or clean installation and I am proud to say that I am writing this on my computer with Vista running! I used the file transfer wizard to transfer my files and settings to an external hard drive and that gave me the peace of mind to do the clean install...(the Custom path involves formatting the hard drive) Here's the key thing I found on the Maxtor website: "Question / Symptom I am looking for new or updated software drivers for my hard drive. Where can I locate these drivers? Does Maxtor supply these drivers for my hard disk drive? Answer Maxtor does not supply software drivers for SATA, ATA or SCSI hard drives. Hard drives do not require specific device drivers. However, separate software drivers are normally required for third party PCI cards or for a motherboard’s embedded hard disk interface. These are the components that manage the transfer of information between the operating system and the hard drive. If you are trying to obtain updated controller or motherboard device drivers, you will need to contact the respective motherboard, system, or controller manufacturer. Note: The CD-ROM and/or the floppy diskette that is included with the Maxtor retail kit does not contain disk drivers. However, the MaxBlast (II, 3 or 4) CD-ROM does contain drivers for the Maxtor's PCI adapter cards. To obtain replacement or updated drivers for the Maxtor (Promise) ATA PCI card please visit the Product Support Download Page. For information on where to obtain Ultra ATA or UDMA drivers for your system or motherboard please Click Here. If you would like to download an updated version of either the MaxBlast or PowerMax utility please visit the Product Support Download Page." Arnie, Here it is over a year after your post, and I received the exact same error. Did you ever get past this issue on your XPS 600? Arnie, Turns out that nVidia has released an update to there drivers that wil meet the compatability requirment of the Vista SP1 Upgrade Comaptability Test. 'nForce Driver' (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_32_15.08.html) The Media Shield software update fixed the issue completly and I'm loading Vista rigt now.
