Default ICS works, but file sharing not

Hello,

I have very intresting case here. I have DesktopPC running XP Pro SP2 and
laptop running Vista Biz. My Desktop is connected to the internet via DialUp
ADSL modem. I am using cross cable or bluetooth connection to connect these
two computers to LAN. I managed to share the internet connection, i.e. laptop
is accessing internet via desktop in both cases (cable & bluetooth), however,
I can't share the files on these two computers. Moreover, then I open Network
And Sharing center on laptop and view the full network map, the picture is
normal: I see laptop, the hub, my DesktopPC and internet. When I open the
"Network" there are the laptop and "Residential Gateway Device" instead of a
DesktopPC. When I open "View workgroup computers" form "My network places" I
see both computers, however if I try to open the laptop share I get the
message "The network path was not found."

Do you have any suggestions or maybe you need any additional information?

Thanx in advance,
Xenobius

Xenobius,

The error "The network path was not found." aka Error 53, is well known here.
It's a name resolution problem, generally caused by SMBs being blocked. There's
one recently discovered problem, that's gaining in visibility.

Other than that, I'd look for a NetBT setting problem, or a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall.

You could provide logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, so we can diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
