I have similar problem as Linda830 but a bit more basic.
I have a printer on a wireless XPHome Desktop and I want to print from a Vista Home Basic Laptop.Configuration is as follows; XPHome desktop wired to Linksys Wireless router Wireless XPHome desktop with Canon ip4200 printer Wireless Vista Home Basic laptop I can see the wireless desktop and printer from the wired desktop I want to but can't see the wireless desktop and printer from the Vista laptop All 3 comps have same workgroup name All 3 comps have internet access via the network On the Vista laptop all I can see is the private network name and internet At one point during my setup of the new laptop, I had access to the wireless desktop and printer and printed out a page. For some reason I can no longer duplicate the setup. Right now the ip4200 printer is listed in the laptop's printers from when it worked but I can no longer use it. This problem is baffling me. I've been trying everything I can get my hands on. It's a preloaded laptop so I can't ask Microsoft about it. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Don't know how to do that from Vista laptop. Vista is totally new to me.

Hi Pierre,
From my own efforts in getting my printer (hosted on an XP box) shared to a Vista laptop, I learned two key ingredients seemed to be needed for it to work: First, networking & sharing needed to function between the computers. Second, Vista needed to have the proper driver loaded for the printer. It was this second issue that I (and I believe Linda830) were struggling with (see her thread started 29 Dec for details). In your case, since you did have the printing working at one time and you still have the ip4200 icon visible on the laptop, it sounds to me like the problem lies with getting Vista to see the two XP machines. You've said the computers have the same Workgroup name. Here's some other things to check on the Vista machine: -The Network Location type is "Private" (you implied this is already the case I think) -In the Sharing And Discovery Section - File Sharing is ON, Public Folder Sharing is ON. You could also try to see if you can turn ON Printer Sharing (I couldn't, since there was no local printer attached to the Vista box, but in your case perhaps the fact that you did at one time have a printer recognized might mean Vista will let you turn it ON) -Windows Firewall (or other firewall) is set to allow sharing. You may, while setting up, disconnect yourself from the internet and then turn off all firewalls, just to simplify things. Once you get printing working, then turn the firewalls on again. -When setting up I logged in as a user with the same name and with Admin privileges on both computers, but I have since noticed that this is not needed anymore to print. Perhaps it never was... There is a troubleshooting guide on Microsoft's website that might be helpful - go to Vista's Solution Center and under the heading Home Networking, click on "Troubleshooting network and Internet connection problems". On the next page, select "Troubleshoot problems with computers not appearing on the network map", then "A computer or device does not appear on the network map." The discussion about the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) may be relevant to you - there is a download for XP computers that installs LLTD to allow Vista computers to see the XP machine. I installed that. Other things I tried: Ensure NetBIOS is enabled for the network cards on all the machines. This protocol seems to be used in locating computers on the local network. Until I enabled it, I couldn't see the shared computers in Windows Explorer's Network Neighborhood, but I could reach them with a 'ping 192.168.1.100' at the command prompt (replace 192.168.1.100 with whatever IP address is assigned to the remote computer). Good luck, Bjarne "Pierre Martin" wrote: I have similar problem as Linda830 but a bit more basic. LLTD is activated
Printer and file sharing is on for the desktop Can't find Netbios as an option on the wireless adaptors I think the problem is with the Vista laptop since I can see and print to the wireless desktop from the wired desktop running XP. I can also ping the wireless desktop/printer from the laptop "Bjarne Hansen /freya" wrote: Hi Pierre, From my own efforts in getting my printer (hosted on an XP box) shared to a Vista laptop, I learned two key ingredients seemed to be needed for it to work: First, networking & sharing needed to function between the computers. On my Vista box, I got to the NetBIOS by:
Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center Click on 'Manage Network Connections. You should see a list of ntwk adapter(s). Right-click on the ntwk adapter you are using:select Properties. In the Networking tab, highlight the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) entry. Click on the Properties button. In the General tab, click on the Advanced button. In the WINS tab, there should be several radio buttons for NetBIOS settings. Choose the Enable NetBIOS option, and OK your way back out of the dialog boxes... Hope this helps, Bjarne "Pierre Martin" wrote: I can ping the XP desktop from the Vista laptop but not vice-versa. Got the IP addresses from the DHCP clients table on the router. Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard "Pierre Martin" wrote: LLTD is activated Printer and file sharing is on for the desktop Can't find Netbios as an option on the wireless adaptors I think the problem is with the Vista laptop since I can see and print to the wireless desktop from the wired desktop running XP.
