Default Printer

Hello I have a problem. I have a new laptop with windows vista and my desktop
has XP on my desktop is a printer installed and with my old laptop i could
print with that printer. Now I'm trying to get this to work with my new
laptop but it doesn't work. On the desktop I have enabled sharing the printer
and both computers are in the same workgroup and if i get the vista to detect
the printer via the setup of "add printer" it will find it but when i try and
connect it it says "can not connect, acces denied" I've tried some things but
it didn't help. Who knows this problem and can help me solve it. Thank you.
ps I've installed the driver of the printer and i can still print with my
old laptop.

"edit..I mis read your OT" sorry but what do you mean?

And yes i can share files between computers with no problems. I supose it
supports my printer. I have downloaded the new vista printer driver from the
website of the printer and I installed it without any problems

Did you download a driver specifically certified for Windows Vista?

Try installing the printer using a local port.

Ok cracked it !

I think the problem exists because the printer can have an addon
network port. the software presumes it will be attached directly to the
network, not through another computer. so when it sees the dns name its
only the first eight characters, it looks it up in its list and just
gives up.

So, I figured ( with your help people ) that if i could get the drivers
on i could change it manually I downloaded the 451MB (Yikes) software
package and installed the driver up to the point where it tries to
detect the printer. installed the printer via the find new printer /
network / wifes machine etc. Vista then installed the driver quite
happily. I then canceled the HP software installation and Voila !

So, thanks for your help people.

Now, wheres that flaming kitten !

Thanks everybody for all the comments but I solved the problem myself with
the help of another website. It looks like more people have the same problem
I had.

This is what i did:

Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

ChooseAdd a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the
drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the
\\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is bedroom and the
printer name is myprinter so I typed in \\bedroom\myprinter

Then install the drivers and you're done. This really worked and i red on
the internet that it worked for other people aswell so if anybody has this
same problem try this and big chance it will work.
