Default Networking problems XP to Vista

Hello,
I have been desperately searching for a solution to my problem for
days... I hope you make it!
I have recently networked my two computers using a router on an
ethernet connection.
I have a Pentium 4 running Windows XP Pro machine and an HP Compaq Core
Duo 2 running Windows Vista Home Basic
The network setup was successful with all the firewalls (both OS and
others) closed and all the hardisks shared for reading (not deleting or
writing)
When I am on the Vista machine I have full access to the XP, I can
explore the XP computer, copying whatever I want from the hardisks,
having only a minor problem of access to the Program Files, WINDOWS,
User/All Users folders.
The main problem I am facing is that from the XP machine, when I go to
My Network Places is that I can see only my computers harddrives and
when I got to the "View workgroup computers" although i can see the
vista machine i am asked for username and password that does not exist.
Typing the User Account Name as Username and leaving the password blank
does not work.
When I installed RealPopup, a messenger for networks, I could send
messages from vista to xp but when i tried sending messages from xp to
vista, they were not delivered.
Please provide me with step-by-step solution because I may be good at
computers and programming but I know almost nothing about networking...
Thanks a lot!!

I think i forgot to mension (if it is necessary for you) that it is not
a wireless connection, it all works with cables like the ones of
telephone lines and from that I have both networking and internet
connection

Have you create the same username with the password on both computer? Or
this link may help.

Vista Permission IssuesCan I assume the external drive used to be connecting
to other computer and you just re-connect it the the Vista? Check the
permission using this command: . ...

If you don't want to be hassled by passwords, turn off password protected in
vista Network and sharing.
That is why you are being asked for one when you try and access vista from XP.
Read the rest of my post.

Happy NewYear.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.
