Default Windows media player stopped working

Here is an update. Nikon directed me to the following site to get the latest
version of nefcodec.dll:

http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/index.html.en

I installed this update and the problem appears to have gone away.

Interestingly enough when you try to update the codec from within Capture NX
it reports back that no updates are available.

Nikon also makes a point of saying that they are not responsible for WMP.

Thanks again for the help.

What does Nikon support say about this issue? If their uninstall did leave
nefcodec.dll on the system, they would likely want to know about it.

restore point but did not help.

Any help would be appreciated, this is beyond my capabilities.

My problem with Windows Media Player is that I can't even call it up. When
I click on the icon or go through the programs menu, absolutely nothing
happens. Any suggestions on how to get it back other than reinstalling Vista?

Can you run it if you right-click on it and Run As Administrator?

Did you uninstall Norton Internet Security from this machine?

I did right click and try to run as administrator and it still didn't
respond. It used to work just fine but suddenly will not load.

I do have Norton Security on the system but I don't understand why it used
to work and now doesn't.

Is it listed in the Proceses tab of Task Manager?
Was SatelliteTVforPC 2006 ever on this system? That's very bad software
that can cause this problem.

Did you have SatelliteTVforPC 2006 on this system at some point? The error
you're encountering very much looks like that you did. That will badly
corrupt the Windows Media Player registry keys, which is they pulled their
software from the market.
