Default Vista Slow downloads

I just got an Inspiron 530 from Dell with Vista Home Premium installed.
Everything seems fine except that the network downloads seem terribly slow.
On my XP laptop using the same connection, speeds are at around 1000 kbps. On
Vista download speeds are more like 100kbps even though uploads are at
800kbps.

I have tried updating drivers, disabling auto-tuning, etc. I don't have any
anti-virus s/w like Mcafee or Norton. Vista's network diaganostics doesn't
seem to detect any problem, but did change TCP/IP MTU settings. If anybody
can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Thommen

You left out how you connect to the Internet and since you presumably
have a router, the make/model of same. Check on the router mftr.'s
website for a firmware update.

My apartment is wired and I have directly connected the PC to the Ethernet
port. As I mentioned when I plug the cable into the XP laptop, it is fine,
which makes me think there is some vista-specific setting. I didn't want to
introduce additional variables with a router.

Then check with the cable/dsl modem mftr. for a firmware update. I
haven't seen your issue on other laptops/machines running Vista, wired
or otherwise, so I'd look to something specific to your situation -
starting with your Internet equipment.

Changing a DSL MTU: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793 Many DSL modems
are, in fact, routers, and changing the computer's MTU from default is
usually not a good idea since the router will control the transfers
through its MTU setting. Check DSL reports on your modem for particulars.

You can try disabling IPV6 and QoS in your TCP/IP settings. This helped
my Vista cable connection.

You can compare your two computer's settings by running ipconfig /all
from a command prompt on XP, or from a command prompt with administrator
privilege on Vista. Compare the two and note any differences.

If you have static IP addresses for the two machines, try setting to
automatic (DHCP) and see if there is a performance change.
