"Dave T." It just ain't there. Not a big deal for me since floppies went away I've never been concerned about file size, but what you guys are seeing isn't on my computer. I just noticed though that "Documents" is in a pictures format. Something new to work on... sorry, i fear i dont understand. if i doubleclic the desktop link with my login name, then i hover the mouse over documents, i get the tooltip '1.46 gb'. 'a picture format' means? ciao, ZC -- Dave T. "Many people die at twenty-five and aren't buried until they are seventy-five". Benjamin Franklin cool : many people think they're existing -- mallarme' I found the problem. I had disabled "tool tips" in folder options because the text balloons were in the way when doing drag & drop operations. You led me to the answer, thank you! I think I will leave it disabled though, since I don't need it. "Pictures format" means that if I open the "documents" folder in the "list details" view format the column headers read "Date taken", etc. I think that this is because at one time I had stored some pictures I received in emails to that folder. I guess Vista will change the view format automatically if you do that. -- Dave T. "Many people die at twenty-five and aren't buried until they are seventy-five". Benjamin Franklin |

I think I will leave it disabled though, since I don't need it. glad being useful somehow. I guess Vista will change the view format automatically if you do that. the way vista's explorer looks is a real PITA. nor do i expect much from sp1, as mimicking apple -- in a world not consistant with apple and used to details since c:\dir and nc's times -- has its risks. anyway, after some trouble with vista showing any folder as it thought better, i could arrange atleast it to reset any folder as an 'unknown folder' and usually show it in the details view, without harassing about date taken, pixel size, duration and that stuff. btw, i've got folders with thousands of pictures, and it's uselessly time consuming. i do not want infos on them, i just need to program them, and sometimes to enjoy them :P an useful link about the explorer behavior was http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/1...t-clean-state/ hth, but read it carefully before trying... ciao, ZC note: even after applying the changes suggested by that pages, i stil cant uninstall many programs. panel programs just doesnt show the 'uninstall' options for many programs, like vs2005 and most things that came with the pc. hope sp1 will fix this... |

Yes ZC, there is no doubt that Vista is a little buggy at this point, but still far and away the most stable OS I've ever used. -- Dave T. "Bob" note: even after applying the changes suggested by that pages, i stil cant uninstall many programs. panel programs just doesnt show the 'uninstall' options for many programs, like vs2005 and most things that came with the pc. hope sp1 will fix this... VS 2005 Diagnostic and Uninstall Tool http://blogs.msdn.com/hgao/archive/2...01/445831.aspx thank you. the page dates from Saturday, July 30, 2005. a bit before vista was out, i fear. i wasnt speaking of a vs problem. *this* vista system just doesnt allow me to uninstall vs2005, nor all the roxios, the java machine, and many others. as for uninstalling 2005, on my xp work machine i installed it, then vs 2008, then uninstalled 2005 --and 2008 stopped working despite 3 more uninstall/reinstalls. a friend pointed to a page with the suggest to completely erase a vs 2008 key from the registry, then reinstall it anew. it worked. as i installed both from msdn original dvd's, final versions, not betas (i got thru the beta in 2005, and the mess was even worse) and both take long minutes writing and unwriting in the registry, the least i can tell is that i wouldnt expect such behaviors. regards, ZC |

"Dave T." Yes ZC, there is no doubt that Vista is a little buggy at this point, but still far and away the most stable OS I've ever used. lets talk about that. you hadnt five happy years with w2k, had you ![]() sofar the ratio of 'soft crashes' is some like 5:1, vista:w2k. with win2000 i could set a dsl shared connection up for weeks with not a crash whatsoever. with vista, until i set up a router, the win2000 client machine browsed happily, while this vista one had unexpected and frequent blank spots every day in all its internet connections. i admit that w2k got to sp4, though. and i can be patient and sit by the river until i see an sp floating by ![]() ciao, ZC |

Hello ZC, I'm in total agreement with you .. Thank YOU for the link I read the information there and it only confirmed what I was afraid of. As I said in my first post, I'm totally new to Vista and the more I use it the more I miss my XP Pro ... *Thanks so much to ALL who wrote and helped me. I really appreciate the information given.* Jenn -- JennB213 |

The reason I quit XP was that I tired of doing monthly wash & wipes. I'm now in month 8 with Vista, and I've forgotten what blue looks like. Not one crash, zero bsod's, lots of speed with 3 gigs of ram. I'm a happy camper with Vista. FWIW, I remember Win3.0 wouldn't add 2+2 without a crash. -- Dave T. "Dave T." ha scritto No, I didn't have 5 years with w2k, but I had six years with XP. The reason I quit XP was that I tired of doing monthly wash & wipes. I'm now in month 8 with Vista, and I've forgotten what blue looks like. Not one crash, zero bsod's, lots of speed with 3 gigs of ram. I'm a happy camper with Vista. FWIW, I remember Win3.0 wouldn't add 2+2 without a crash. the first windows i met was 2.0, with the double windows logo converging to the center from both sides if i remember. a bit slow on 286/386's. i scarcely used xp. have it on my work machine but dont like it. imho and imhx it never added anything substantial to win2000, in a work environment at least. bsod ratio same or greater. yesterday bychance i tested a vb routine to check th o.s. version. this is the code Case 5 If .dwMinorVersion = 0 Then getVersion = "Windows 2000" Else getVersion = "Windows XP" End If Case Else getVersion = .dwMajorVersion & "." & .dwMinorVersion & " - Windows Vista" (i added the last two lines, which give a 6.0 version for vista) i translate it as "xp is a minor upgrade from win2000). which i knew by experience. as for the speed, this vista machine is fast. but it's a dual core, the xp machine is a p4, same clock. and i feel that both 2k and xp on this machine would be definitely faster. i like vista, though. but it's far from being steady. ciao, ZC |
