I have started to notice a lot of vista systems that are connected direct to
cable modems saying not connected to internet or showing unidentified
network. You cannot create a new connection, because the create a connection
is for PPPoE only, (which is not very smart). And when the browser gives you
the option to connect, it asks for name/password for a PPPoE connection.

1. How do I get the Vista networking to recognize the fact is has a direct
connection to the Internet?

2. How can you create a new connection without it defaulting to PPPoE?

3. Is there any way to force Vista to simply connect to a network, if the
network is available, and has been checked with other computers as working
properly, and Network discovery is on, and vista simply says unknown network??

Further information -

Using ethernet, it is happenning with all brands of
cable modems connected to ethernet. We have had to send MANY people to their
computer manufacturer for OS support, since this appears to be a Microsoft
Vista issue. Tests with XP systems reveal that no connection problem with the
cable modem or router exists. This is specific to Vista only.

Lastly, I actually had 3 calls today, 2, just as the above, unknown network,
wont connect, but the third, would not even turn on network discovery. We
could plug it inot the cable modem, and the modem would ID the computer, but
the computer refused to turn on netowrk discovery. Hooking up another
computer running Vista worked great? I am starting to get really confused.

I've sent you an email, but on the point below, if you are saying
you plug a computer directly into a cable modem and expect to be
able to use network discovery, this won't happen because this is a
PUBLIC network.

As for pc's behind a router, hard to diagnose since each case is
different. Lots of time, unbinding IPv6 resolves issues.

an exclamation mark between computer and network, and a red x from that to
the internet. Same with router. Ensured that it is set to public network on
cm,and private or public network on router, envokes no changes.

was the cable modem power cycled when the router was removed and the
computer connected directly?

post the text output of ipconfig /all from this computer.

BTW, you have not posted any information on the computer(s) that
have this problem or the network cards and routers. You really need
to provide this.

I am facing the same issue here... I tried to connect directly to my cable
modem and windows cannot find the network. It keeps trying to identify the
network and then shows the red X as if the cable was disconnected.

I am able to connect through the USB port, though. I appreciate any help
since I have been trying to fix it for a week now.

what cable modem? who is your ISP? please post the text output of
ipconfig /all when the connection is in the failed state. (you DID
power cycle the cable modem when you switched from USB to Ethernet,
correct?)
