Default Vista/XP Home Network

I have a desktop running XP Home SP2, and a new laptop running Vista Home
Premium. I would like to access the DVD-ROM drive on the latop from the
desktop. I have successfully shared my desktop resources with the laptop, but
not vice versa.

Both computers are on the same Workgroup. I have turned off Password
protected sharing and shared the DVD-ROM drive in the Folders window. Network
Discovery and File Sharing are on.

When I try to access the laptop from my desktop through Windows ExplorerMy
Network PlacesMicrosoft Windows Network"workgroup name""Laptop name" I get
a window that says "'laptop name' not accessable. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions."

What else do I need to do?

Rob,

Do you have any other resources on the laptop shared successfully, or is this
the first one? Did you set the Network Location Type to Private?

Do you have any other personal firewall, or other security program on the
laptop? Anti-virus?

After disabling Password Protected Sharing, did you enable the Guest account for
network access?

The network is set to private. While I have successfully shared resources
from the desktop to the laptop, I have not been able to to it the other way
around.

Only what came with the laptop - Windows firewall and McAfee virus.

network access?

Didn't know about this one. When I open the Command Window and type "net
user Guest /activate:yes", I get the following: "System Error 5 has occured.
Access is denied." I get the same thing when I substitute my user name in for
Guest.

Thanks,
Rob

Start the command window as an admin.

Uncle!

I got the command to run, but still no access (same message as before). I
reset the Guest password - still nothing. My admin user name and password are
the same on both systems.

I'm just going to copy the contents of my Install DVD (that I wanted to see
from the desktop) to the desktop from the laptop and install the software
that way.

Thanks for your help.

My impression is that there is a tool "easy lan folder share" which
can solve the problems easily.

you may search it at google.
