Default Vista & XP Networking Problems

I have a desktop with XP and a laptop I recently purchased with Vista on it.
I have been trying to access shared folders between the two computers and
have found it impossible access each other. Here are some things you should
know:

- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing
is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.

- Network is set to Private

- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"

- Both computers can ping eachother

- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and
deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.

- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work

- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on
XP Computer from microsofts website
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

- Tried enabled NetBIOS on all computers as suggested by a forum post I read

And so far, I have had NO luck. It's obviously very frustrating. However,
one thing I CAN do is connect to my xp computer as a Media Device through
WMP, since I installed the Media Extender patch from microsoft to allow me to
stream media to my xbox 360, which apparently makes it show up as a media
device. I can stream songs and such that I've imported into WMP on the XP
computer, but nothing more. HELP!?

perhaps I should mention also that the XP computer does show up on the
network MAP, but not as one of the shared computers

Elenion,

I'd diagnose the problem, starting with logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig
/all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(Download browstat, and note how to start a Vista command window!):

Run the XP's home Network file and Printer sharing wizard, so that it will
know Vista is there to share with!

Default Vista & XP Networking Problems

I have had the exact same problem and have just solved it!
1. As already stated, make sure both computers have the same name, and i
mean renaming the xp computer at the basic level not just creating a user
account.
2. I was getting an error message that the original name was not a "proper"
computer name, even though the LLTD renamed the computer.
3. Switch on Windows firewall on both computers.
4. Make sure you share a folder on your Vista computer. Go through the steps
outlined in "Network and SharingCenter" .
5. Restart both computers and the Vista computer should say "configuring
updates" as it shuts down.
6. When they restart you should be able to not only see each computer but
also transfer files.
I really hope this works for you as it has done for me.

Default Vista & XP Networking Problems

Hi Chuck,

I'm having trouble getting my Vista Ultimate desktop to see the XP machines
and vice versa. I'll copy and paste all the info I'm sure you'll need below
but let me say right now that the browstat wouldn't run on the Vista PC.
When I opened to text file it was empty. Also, you'll notice in the
ipconfig that it says NetBios over TCPIP is disable but it's not. I have no
idea why it says disabled (see pic)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1..._IPsetting.jpg. This
is gonna be lengthy so please forgive me

May cause other problems later. It should work at least as well
if the two computers have different computer names, as they
should have.

It is useful if the workgroup name is the same on both computers
though.
