I may have hijacked another post with my problem and I do apologize so I'll start a new topic.
I'm having trouble getting my Vista Ultimate desktop to see the XP machines and vice versa. The XPs see each other fine. I'll copy and paste all the info I'm sure you'll need below but let me say right now that the browstat wouldn't run on the Vista PC. When I opened to text file it was empty. Also, you'll notice in the ipconfig that it says NetBios over TCPIP is disable but it's not. I have no idea why it says disabled (see pic) http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1..._IPsetting.jpg. This is gonna be lengthy so please forgive me. No firewalls are installed and the one in Windows has been disabled. #1 - XP Home (Wireless laptop) IPCONFIG INFO: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : HPPavilion Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : hsd1.il.comcast.net. Wy Wy, OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and both Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active. Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...ssistance.html And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN, and see what error you get. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/06/command-window-in-windows-vista.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/0...ows-vista.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. Hi Chuck,
I'll do that tonight when I get home. I tried running the browstat on Vista as admin and still came out with a blank file. It was empty. It was easier to place the file on the desktop and run it that way so that's the way I ran in case you're interested. Wy "Chuck [MVP]" wrote in message ... I have a similar problem. can see my xp computers from windows vista

I want to disclaim myself that I am not a sure expert on anything. I am a
heavy user though, and I do not mean alcohol or drugs. There is a GOOD chance that Vista does not take you seriously at all. The fact that you paid 3 grand for this machine does have some relevance but you have to establish it. You have to establish yourselves a one. This is what you do (if you haven't already done it). You open Command Prompt as "run as administrator" which gives you temporarily the rights of the Administrator (and the administrator is an OBJECT in your machine). Then you type lusrmgr.msc and do Carriage Return. You will see a GUI where you will see in the Left Pane the Group thumbnail. Double click on it and in the Right pane you will see a bunch of Groups. You should add yourselves to the first Group: "ADMINISTRATORS." Note that there is already one member in that group: Administrator--again it is an object not you. After you added this name you may close the GUI or you may try to examine other groups. There is a group the Network Configuration Operators. You may try to add yourselves to it as well. I am working sort of backwards in here. Answering your question: "In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your selves as administrator" It's been about 6 months since I touched that part of XP. It is entirely from memory. It is a fairly irresponsible statement. If there is a way to establish sharing for "everyone" and you do not mind in terms of security, you may as well do it. Otherwise, set shared permissions for select group of users or for the administrator which in XP I think is the person who signs himself in. And the last thing: but I have accounts which I don't use on the xp machines that are not on the vista machine. that shouldn't make a difference, should it? Probably not. I should say, not at all, although I may be wrong. With the passwords you should make sure that all the accounts are aligned, go over them another time, make sure user names are spelled the same, that you have the full right to access the Network. What else? Nothing comes to mind at this point. It is doable. "MattK" wrote in message ... Wy Wy, OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and both Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active. Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...ssistance.html And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN, and see what error you get. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/06/command-window-in-windows-vista.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/0...ows-vista.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. unfortunately lusrmgr.msc doesn't work on vista home (i get an error message
saying it won't run on vista home premium). Not sure that would make a difference--i am already an adminstrator. And i confirmed same username/password combinations on all PCs. -- Regards, MattK "alexB" wrote: I want to disclaim myself that I am not a sure expert on anything. I am a heavy user though, and I do not mean alcohol or drugs. I have a similar problem. can see my xp computers from windows vista machine, but can't access them (i click on the computers and get a message to enterusername and password--i do and it says, incorrectly, that they are wrong). but what do you mean by this: "In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your selves as administrator" if i can see the shared folders on the xp machine from another exp machine the network shares must be set up, no? and why all users. several of my user accounts (the ones i am trying to use on vista) are identical on vista and xp (same username/password). but i have accounts which i don't use on the xp machines that are not on the vista machine. that shouldn't make a difference, should it? -- Regards, MattK "alexB" wrote: Sorry for reposting. I did not realize when I posted it a couple of minutes ago that I did it in html. Now is the plain text. Control Panel ( Classic View) ==Network & Sharing Center== Set Network Discovery ON. Set File Sharing ON Set Password Protected sharing ON Place cursor on Network. Double click. After a short while you should see all the computer on your network. Keep double clicking on the computers. If you need to do Printer sharing, make sure you enabled Printer sharing on the previous pane but first you must see the printer's image in the last window. You will not be able to do any of these unless you first forced your XP to reciprocate. In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your selves as administrator. It is also possible that you will need to elevate yourselves in Vista to the level of an administrator. Remember, you are not an administrator yet. Open Command Prompt and run it "as administrator" Type lusrmgr.msc. It will give you a GUI: Local Users and Groups. Click on Groups thumbnail. In the Left pane find the group "Administrators" Add yourselves to this group. Close the GUI. Enjoy your networking. Forget about ipconfig. Forget about NetBios. Forget about NetBT. If you are related to Jane Wyman I should say that I enjoyed her in a movie the other night: Let's do it over again. Do it over again with your LAN. "Wyman" wrote in message ... |
