Default Slave hard drive almost invisable

In my machine on the primary ribbon cable I have a new master 250GB hard
drive upon which I have installed Vista.
As the slave on the same ribbon I have my old XP boot disc, which is still
bootable if I change the primary device in the BIOS to be IDE1
On the secondary ribbon cable I have two DVD RW. (Not important but included
for completeness). They're both Hitachi deskstar drives Vista of 250MB, XP of
100MB.
In vista I am unable to 'explore' my XP disc.
In device manager Properties Volumes, when I try and 'populate' details (via
the populate button) For the vista disc it populates correctly stating its
drive C and a size of 238437MB.
whereas for the XP disc I get the message ..
'volume information for this disc cannot be found'
Conversely when I change boot device to XP, all is well, XP drive displays
correctly in explorer and Vista drive can be viewed successfully

Instead of device manager, try Disk Management.
