Hello,

When attempting to open Windows Mail, two error message appear:
1. Windows mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the
Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mail mailbox data is currently used
by another program, such as a virus scanner. Close the program or wait for it
to complete its operation, then open Windows Mail again.
2. Windows mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be
initialized. Windows Mail may not be installed correctly.

Shutting down PC-cillin Internet Security and removing the edbtmp file do
not solve this issue. I assume these issues have a relation with an error
message in Windows Fax and Scan that I get every time I try to send a fax:
The message could not be sent. The media is write protected.

Could someone please help me out with this?

What version of Vista are you using?

Move all the files out of the message store into another directory and then
it should start.

No, I did not upgrade from Windows XP but installed Vista in a separate
partition on another drive (did even uninstall the drive on which XP is
installed to make sure the Vista boot partition would not install on that
drive).

In the mean time I found out Windows Mail does start from the Administrator
account in the Safe Mode, so I suppose it is a security issue. MSOE.DLL is
available in a winsxs subdirectory, but not in system or system32.

You can look at event viewer for ESENT errors. That might indicate there is
a permissions issue on the message store location.

Windows Mail message store ...The application was unable to open the My case
is slightly different ...

I am getting ready to install RC1 so I copied my Windows Mail Directory to
another drive and then using options advanced pointed to the new directory.

Now when i start Microsoft mail I get "... could not be started ..." folowed
by another dialog essentially stating the same followed by a 3rd one stating
"... could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized ..."

I thought the setting pointed to the Windows Mail FOLDER ... does it need a
different explicait reference?

I can't seem to get into Mail to change the reference back else I would try
that.

Any ideas?

That's the wrong way to do it, plus they have changed the message store from
that in earlier versions, so the previous build won't work in RC1.

The proper means to move the message store is to go to Tools | Options |
Advanced | Maintenance and then set the Store Folder to a new location.
Then close WinMail and it will copy all the messages and database to that
new location. Then when you start WinMail, it will then use that new
location. Unfortunately there is a bug in RC1 and the new location is
written corruptly to the registry, so the move currently doesn't work
(workaround is to manually change the value in the registry).

So what you did was to change the location and point to an existing store
and WinMail then overwrote the existing store with its current one.

If the message stores between builds were the same format (and they aren't),
then you could conceivably just change the store root value in the registry
to the new path and WinMail would pick that up (although importing the
registry settings would be more complete).

Anyway, now that its all screwed up, you can probably fix it by going to
this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Then set the value of the Store Root to a blank string (ie -- nothing).
Then when WinMail opens, it will be unable to find the path and it will then
set it to the default path and it should start again.
