This is probably a stupid question, but when I tell vista to turn file
sharing on, shouldn't it actually listen to me? When I select 'turn file
sharing on' and apply it doesn't actually seem to do anything. Also the
public folder filesharing gives the message 'RPC server unavailable'. Other
computers on the network cannot be seen, but the router can.

I have checked the router, done all the standard reseting things, checked
that file sharing and network discovery are allowed by the firewall (and even
turned it off to make doubly sure), used the netsetup program, and had
several people who are fairly fluent with networking all give up in
frustration.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It truly boggles the mind that vista
will not follow my instructions.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

This hasn't solved the problem, although it did raise a new symptom. The
workgroup on my system screen shows as "Not available". The change name tab
on the system properties screen shows the workgroup as "workgroup" which is
correct, but the options to change it are greyed out.

As well my system now tells me I am not connected to a network, although I
am accessing the net through the network. Clicking on the popup and selecting
"connect to a network" brings up a window that says I am connected to a
network. Vista seems a little confused about my network status.

I also think you have misunderstood my problem with the file sharing. when
opening the network and sharing panel, and click on 'turn on file sharing'
under the 'file sharing' dropdown and click apply, the computer promptly
ignores my command and leave filesharing off. I cannot turn file sharing ON
because vista will not let me.

I have an update on the situation about my file sharing. The 'Workstation'
service will not turn on, and when I try

Error 1068 the dependency service or group failed to start

This would seem to be the source of my problems (I believe). It relies upon
Bowser, Network Store Interface service, SMB 1x redirector and SMB 2.0
redirector.

My understanding is slim, but I can only find the Network store interface
service on my list. Is there a way to replace this service if it has become
corrupted? The services with depend on this service will not start.

Someone on the internet suggested that the location descriptor for the
..dll's have been changed and no longer point at the service. Is there a
registry fix or a way to check if the service is actually install/being
pointed at/not corrupted?

I'm having the same issue.. further investigation reveals errors in the
event log related to srv or service is not a valid win32 application.. i
cant find any info on this.. but i do know that srv/srvnet are sub
dependents of the server object.
