I tried all of the suggestions for connecting to the internet using a vista
laptop as host to connect to a xp laptop never got a internet connection on
the xp machine...I tried using the xp laptop as the host and was able to
access the internet on the vista laptop...why this works I have no idea but
it works for me.

Here you could get better advice, with more detail.

Hoping that you're discussing using ICS on the alternate "hosts", it would help
if you'd provide logs from "ipconfig /all" - 4 logs in all.
1) XP laptop, used as ICS host.
2) XP laptop, used as ICS client.
3) Vista laptop, used as ICS host.
4) Vista laptop, used as ICS client.
