Just installed Vista RC1 with MS Outlook 2003.
I would like to import my mail that was on Outlook Express 6 in Win XP to MS Outlook 2003 which is still available on a different drive (dual boot XP/Vista) - but I am unable to boot in to XP due to missing hal.dll. Can anyone please help? |

Hi, Allsys.
Would it work as well for you to import your OE6 mail into Vista's Windows Mail, rather than Outlook 2003? I've not used Outlook very much, but I've used Outlook Express for a decade or so. And now, with Windows Mail replacing OE in Vista, I've been beta testing WM for about a year. And I've been dual-booting for most of a decade, too, now including both x86 and x64 versions of WinXP Pro and several builds of Vista. WinXP and Vista are installed into several logical drives on my 3 HDs. I never had any success importing OE6 mail stores into WM until recently. WM's File | Import and Export | Messages wizard always told me there were no messages in my OE store folder. Finally, I figured out that it was because of Vista's security features. I had to give myself access to that OE mail store! Once I did that, I was able to import all my OE6 mail from WinXP Pro into Vista's Windows Mail. (I'm just one retired guy with one computer in my office-in-the-home, so I've never bothered to learn much about Users and Permissions and such - until Vista.) You should be able to restore your ability to boot into WinXP by doing a Repair Install, also known as an in-place upgrade, as described he How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q315341 Trouble is, that violates the "Golden Rule" of dual-booting: Always install the NEWEST operating system LAST. Vista knows how to handle WinXP, but you will be overwriting Vista's startup files with WinXP's, and WinXP has no idea how to start Vista. :( So you'll have to repair Vista's boot manager after the repair install of WinXP. That's not hard to do; just an extra step. Post back if you need instructions. RC -- R. C.
