Default Taskbar "New Mail" notification ?

It would be nice if one didn't actually have to sign in to Mail to find
whether or not there is any. I can't believe that this isn't a feature of
Windows Mail and so far I haven't been able to find any gadgets that will do
that function properly (for build 5728 anyway)

I don't have to sign in to Windows Mail. Is this for mail or news?
