My Vista Premium computer has decided that my home network is now an
unknown network. I received some help from another usenet group and
they explained I should post the results from an ipconfig /all. I did
and my computer came back with169.254.xxx.xxx when it should only have
one of the generic 192.168.1.x addresses. One of the gentlemen from
the group was helping me, but has since gone M.I.A. He explanied that
the problem was the "Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address 169.254.xxx.xxx".
He asked me to try and disable IPv4 and IPv6, but doing that and also
trying to disable both didn't work.

I have a Netgear wgr614v6 router that is fully functional and in fact
I am typing this on my PS3 connected through the same router that
Vista says the internet doesn't work on. I get the "Local-only"
message, but if I try to connect to the router page 192.168.1.1, that
doesn't work either. It's as if Vista thinks I am connected to the
router, but it's not.

Very weird and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You should not disable both IPv4 and IPv6. You may just disable IPv6. If
disabling IPv6 doesn't work, you may try to remove the IPv6 completely. This

i tried to uninstall ipv6 but the button was grayed out. thanks for
all your help. anything else you can think of?

You can't uninstall the IPc6 from the properties of the connection. You need
to use regedit as the link will give you step by step.

After spending 4 phone calls to my ISP and getting nowhere, i eventually
stumbled on the root of the problem in MS KB and had it fixed within a
minute. the issue is down to the DHCP client being disabled. here are
the instructions:

1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click
Manage.
2. In the Computer Management console, double-click Services and
Applications, and then click Services.
3. In the rightmost window, right-click DHCP Client and then click
Properties.
4. Change Startup type to Automatic, and then click OK.
5. Right-click the DHCP Client service again, and then click Start.

I hope this helps at least someone as i've been pulling my hair out
over this all week.
