Upgrading without having XP actaully installed? by
Mary
Vista does not check for upgrade eligibility and is an image based install.
The upgrade must be started from within Windows XP. Instructions at the Vista
web site.

Windows Easy Transfer, XP to Vista, and Belkin's transfer cable by
sunfish9
Hi, I was asked by a friend to help transfer his files, settings etc. from
his old Dell PC running XP to his new HP PC running Vista. He'd purchased
Belkin's transfer cable for this purpose.
Well, I did get the two machines to see each other, and got as far as
selecting which folders I wanted to transfer. When I try to start the
transfer, though, I get an error message and WET has to close...

32 bit or 64 bit by
Derrell Gore
A little confused as to what I should do. I am running xp Pro 32 bit but I
have Athlon 64 dual core processor. If I upgrade to 64 bit will my old
applications still work or am I better off staying with 32 bit?

Details View Column Width Defaults (Registry ??) by
Synapse Syndrome
Probably a bit of a hard one here.
In Explorer windows, one very annoying thing is how narrow the Name column
is set in Details View by default. It is such a pain to have to make it
wider all the time.
Is there a way to make the default around twice as wide? Is there a value
in the registry somewhere that can be changed?
Thanks.

HAL.DLL Issue After Deleting XP by
Kap
Vista is the only OS I use.
When I set it up, I had my old drive still attached to the motherboard
with my install of XP.
I did a fresh install of Vista on my SCSI drives but as soon as Vista
saw the second OS, it offered up the option to boot to the older
version of Windows. Not what I was shooting for obviously.
I deleted that second install after I retrieved my files from XP but

Hi,
Any attempt to install Windows Vista over Windows XP SP2 stops with the
following error message:
"The application or DLL D:\Sources\SPWIZENG.DLL is not a
valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."
Where D: is the driveletter of the DVD.

DVD/CD drive drivers install error by
Scott Thomas
I purchased the Vista Home Upgrade. I am trying to install it, but it says
I need drivers for my DVD/CD drive. What the heck? Why would I need
drivers for my DVD/CD drive? Has anyone come across this? Anyone have a
solution?
I have an NEC DVD-ROM drive.
P.S. I'm not confusing this with inserting drivers INTO my DVD/CD drive for
another device. It is prompting me to insert DVD/CD drivers...

Need help with AMD 3800 X2 upgraded CPU not working right by
[email protected]
Hi all! I just updated my Vista, home made, PC from an Athlon 64 3500+
single core chip to an Athlon 64 3800 X2 to take advantage of multi-
processing in Vista. Here is the problem. When I ran the benchmarks,
Vista is performing terribly. I went from about 12,500 to about 7,500
in 3D Mark 03. I didn't do a clean install of Vista, but the
motherboard (MSI 7025) and OS picked up the CPU right away....

AMD 64 FX-70 and Vista 64 (Home Pro or Ultimate) by
Gerald Abrahamson
Am considering two dual cores as a possible new system with
upgrade possibilities in the future (dual quad-core CPUs).
However, need to understand if Vista 64 can handle the FX-70
processors now--and if there are any known bugs at this time.

No colour after driver update Radeon x1600 (ati) by
Rokli
Hello. Last weekend I've downloaded and installed the latest driver/
software for the x1600 and after the install and reboot it came up in
black-and-white. Colours are gone. I thought my screen was broken, but
no way. I've tested that and before Vista boots I van see colours so
no problem there. I've openen ATI catalyst and so and seacrhed and
searched and searched, but can't find the problem....

How Do I Change Boot Manager Partition From D: to C: by
john
I'm asking Cessna Pilot who posted several BCEDIT commands to run to change
the boot manager drive from one partition/drive to another.
In those BCDEDIT commands you have to enter the GUID of the OS indicated.
Where do you find the GUID for the OS?
TIA,
john

No authorization. Legit copy of Vista? by
Tim Murray
Is there a scenario where a new Vista PC delivered to your door would NOT try
to do the Genuine Advantage phone home? Could vendors do that before
shipping, without setting up user accounts?

STANDARD USER by

I updated to Vista. I was administrator. I created a new account administrtor. I changed my account to Standard User. My now Standard User account still behaves like administrator when I try to do things like change another user to administrator, uninstall, install. It only asks for permission but not requiring the administrator password and the change takes place! CERTAINLY the standard user...
