Vista defrag SUCKS by
Spaz
It's slow, it gives no options, it gives no analysis before defrag, it gives
no progress bars, it gives no results, it gives no statistics.

Microsoft Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall. TO THE TOP by
I.C. Greenfields
Some of us want to choose what "gets out" and what doesn't. And this info
doesn't work since there is nowhere to make such a change in the Windows
Firewall window that comes up. Configure it - HOW? Can someone explain how
it's configured to actually work without being a programmer writing strange
unknown confusing rules for everything that wants to connect to the net? If
not, can someone...

Free Defragger by
news.microsoft.com[_10_]
Can someone recommend a good FREE defragger that shows the process as it did
in W98 and XP? I can't stand having no damn idea how long it will take when
I have other things to do. Why the hell was it changed so no one has a clue
how fragmented the drive is or how long it will take?

Sleep Problems/Blue Screens - I'm SO frustrated! Please help! by
Kcpirana
I'm posting this in a few places, so hopefully someone far smarter than I
will run across it. I'm at my wits' end and I can't get any assistance from
Microsoft or Toshiba on a two-week-old notebook! Here goes:
1) Two or three times, I've gotten a blue screen. The stop error message is
pfn_list_corrupt. Vista shuts down and pretty much restarts itself
normally. When the boot option menu...

Defragment by
WTan
Is defragmentation using XP is okay?
I tried on Vista RC1 or Beta 2 (can't remember which. I tried them both). I
defrag it using XP - the drive where i installed vista, and the Vista can't
load afterwards.
I don't want to try this on my Retail vista yet. I found the defragmentation
program in vista disappointing.
I also read in help and support, that you can get a more advance view by

Why is Windows Vista such a P.O.S. by
Brian Kitt
I have been a developer since early 80's. I've been disappointed, and
re-disappointed year after year at the lower and lower quality of crap that
Microsoft pushes on us. But Vista absolutely takes the cake. I've been
running it for a year, and still get frustrated every single day about what a
total worthless pile of crap this is. Why can't Microsoft stop spening money
trying to convince...

KB931768 problem - ***solved*** by
Richard Urban
I had posted in a couple of various threads that I was also affected by this
update (KB931768) under both Vista and Windows XP. Under Vista, Windows Mail
had become so slow as to be almost impossible to use. Clicking on a post in
the news groups took about 2-4 seconds to show the text in the bottom.
Replying to a post also took about 2-4 seconds to bring us a usable reply
window. Shutting...

Constant FREEZES and no infections by
I.C. Greenfields
No infections of any kind can be found on this PC, yet MSMail, MozillaFF and
IE7 lock up constantly. How can this be fixed short of a reformat and
reinstall of the OS? Vista has been as unstable as W98 for us. Is there any
way to get it as stable as XP? Does anyone know what causes these constant
W98 type freezes so many of us are enduring with Vista?

alyx
Hi everybody,
At the moment I've installed Vista Ultimate x64 Sp2 and on the task
manager I see that the system is using about 1.1 gig of my memory. I
disabled all of the fancy features of vista and using Vista classic
theme. Does anybody have the same problem?
ps. I've 2 gig of ram and quad core processor.

2.5 Mins of Prefetching at Startup by
Gideon_CC
Does anyone notice that after statup is complete, you get a 2 and a half
minute of Prefetching going on. There is a 2 and a half minute of constant
hard disk activity during this time and from the Reliability and Performance
Monitor, it shows hundreds of:
svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted)
svchost.exe (secsvcs)
The top one is related to Superfetch.
The second one is related to...

SP1 Opinions by
CJM[_2_]
I've just installed SP1 (via MSDN) and I'm pleased to say it appears to do
the trick...or at least so far so go.
I've just copied a 200MB file from PC to server and it went like a rocket!
In addition, I'm noting a responsiveness in the odd application; for
example, I use Windows Mail to access USENET, and under SP1, I'm in and
starting browsing much quicker - pre-SP1 there would be a slight...

Vista black screen and cursor after login by
[email protected]
Hi there,
I installed some updates for Vista Enterprise yesterday (the 10th of
October) prior to leaving the office. When I returned this morning
(the 11th), turned my machine on, I got to the Windows login screen,
was able to logon, however, instead of a desktop, I receive a black
screen with a cursor that I can move around.
I've searched the groups, google, etc, the common message seems to...

Network Login Icon no longer displayed by
Paul Calcagno
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2 on an Acer desktop with 2 gig of RAM.
The computer is working fine and my internet connection seems quite normal.
However, I just noticed that the little computer monitor icon that's
supposed to be in the lower right hand corner of my display is not there.
Normally when I hover over this icon a small indicator shows up saying I'm
connected locally and to...

4GB or 3GB physical memory for 32 bit wondows vista by
JC
I have 4GB of physical RAM, windows vista shows only 3326MB. Does it really
help with performance if I have 4GB or should I just install 3GB memory? I
just bought the additional 2GB memory (had 2GB before) and wondering if I
should exchange for a 1GB one. Thanks.
