Hardwire
Hello all, I first I don't know if this is the thread I put this in, but
I apologize if it isn't. Well I built a computer about a month ago and
I just really noticed my download speed hasn't been the same since I
made the move from XP to Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I have DSL and
usally my download speeds were 160kb/s. Now on Vista the speed has
dramatilcy gone down to around 40kb/s. I did a...

very slow performance by
Pamela G
I know this gets discussed frequently, and I have looked over a ton of older
posts. But cannot find enough good info to apply to this laptop. My
teenager's laptop, a Toshiba Satellite series with Vista Home, big HD, 2 Gig
RAM, usual stuff, runs extremely slowly. It is slow to boot, slow to open
any programs, slow to respond to any mouse action. Overall very slow. I have
another Vista...

Font order change by
CayugaLaker
I'm wondering if the list of fonts one sees in an application such as
Thunderbird can be re-ordered so the ones you use frequently can be put at
the top of the list. MS Word does this for you, but can it be done for the OS?

Missing pagefile.sys file by
md
Hoping someone can help out. Been having an issue where programs will
randomly stop responding.
First stop: Inspect Pagefile.sys. However, even though the OS is on
C:, I can't locate a c:\pagefile.sys file.
Some background:
1. Yes, hidden files are set to show in Folder Options.
2. Did a search for the file (including non-indexed locations) and
can't find it.

My machine currently has two IDE drives.
Drive 0 is C: 80GB
Drive 1 is D: and E: 80 GB
I've successfully made a full backup and verify it restores just fine to the
current configuration.
Now, I want to replace the two IDE drives with a single SATA (320 GB) drive.
Do I need to setup this new drive with three partitions and peform a full
restoration without formatting or...

My Computer Devices by
Ryan P[_2_]
Thanks to everyone who addressed my command line window issue... here's
another one that I'm hoping is something simple that I'm just missing!
When I first got my computer and I doubled-clicked "My Computer" the
window would open up, and all the devices were organized according to
type... For example, "Local Hard Disks," "Optical," Removeable,"
"Network." There would be a nice bold heading,...

high cpu usage new computer by
mellieg68
Hi, First time poster, I bought a Compaq SR5413WM about 4 weeks ago. I
use it for Voip based applications, light browsing and some printing.
Everytime I open IE7 the cpu maxes out at 100% and then bounces up and
down erractically, it also happens with other applications such as
windows explorer. I have a AMD LE-1640 2.7 ghz processor, 2 gb ram and
Vista home premium 32 bit. I have no idea why it...

Where did my e-mail icon go? by
Sandee
OK, this is probably a very dumb question with a very easy answer but I'm
baffled. I'm running Windows Vista and I've only had the computer about a
month. I had my e-mail icon on the task bar so all I had to do was click it
and it brought up my e-mail. I guess this is the same as the Quick Launch
menu. Now I've lost my icon and there are two little arrows. If I click on
the arrows a...

creating mirrored partitions by
Tim Blank
This is the situation as it is now:
Vista x64 business is installed on a RAID 0 of 2 320 GB disks. This is
controlled by the onboard RAIDcontroller of my motherboard and so Vista sees
it as a 640 GB harddisk. So far so good.
I bought 2 1TB disks and I want to do the following:
Both disks should have a 200 GB partition for windows and all programs and
they should be mirrors of each other. So...

internet.
About 3 weeks ago, using IE, I noticed web pages stared loading poorly, with

worse. Now, I am unable to download any new files...windows update, firefox,

This will solve a big part of the problem in vista. by
Diblo
I think I can post this in all insult. :sleepy:
*ReadyBoost do:*
ReadyBoost take much of your computer's energy.
It creates problems for the normal driving.
And for the games.
Some are experiencing high load on hard drive as if there running a
scanned or index.
The old games (Xp and below) will not tolerate that ReadyBoost start to
use energy to get things to run while.

Retain original settings after logout by
stephanj
Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to maintain the desktop settings
after a user has logged out?
For example, I would like to create one Standard account in Vista so
many users can log in with that account. This means if one user changes
these settings the origian settings are maintained when they log off.
So the next Standard user must see the ORIGINAL settings.
