can't remove msn by
davidjchuang[_27_]
My OS is home premium 32 bit. I have 3 accounts, one of which is my
Admin/standard user account. That's the account I have the problem. If I
open the Internet Exporer, msn pops up, while the other 2 accounts will
have the Google Gmail on the screens which is what I want. I know where
the file is, but I can't remove it. I used Run As Administrator,
unsuccessful. I tried to take ownership and for...

SP1 Failed Installation Log? by
Cal Bear '66[_2_]
Is there any log generated when SP1 fails?
I did not get any error codes. After one reboot, during the next phase, the
screen just said that the installation had failed and that it was undoing any
changes.
Event logs show nothing (that I can find or understand anyway). If a log were
created, perhaps it would be fairly easy to correct the problem and have a
successful install.

Vista freezing at desktop after auto-update by
Kenneth
My brother inlaws computer will lock up once it gets to the desktop after it
runs auto update. The computer runs just fine as long as we have auto update
disabled. I am going down this weekend to update drivers and run a manual
update. If this problem comes back where would I look to hopefully find the
source of the problem. I submitted a Tech support request about a month ago
with no...

SP 1 Installation -- T O T A L D I S A S T E R by
Cal Bear '66[_2_]
Being very smug since all previous Vista Ultimate updates have installed
flawlessly (except for the Windows Live Toolbar security update that repeatedly
refuses to install), I downloaded and attempted to install the stand alone SP1
pack (since it was not offered on Windows update at around 5pm EST).
I had read the installation problem Microsoft web page that was provided by a
poster in the...

Programs Opening... but not? by
tomduo
I am running Vista, everything should be running fine and such (Got
antivirus, adaware, spybot SD, etc.) and yet my computer is now not opening
programs. I click to execute, then nothing. When I open task manager, it
shows that it is running, albeit not and with a very low memory usage.

XP will not boot from HDD by
epsilon21
My XP Professional was working perfectly until I ran Norton Ghost to do a
backup. Now it will not boot from the HDD the POST runs up to just before DMA
and then it stops showing "no operating system. Inserting a emergency boot
floppy and restarting gets it going, but this is not really satisfactory.
System restore does not help as with the emergency floppy this does not like
things! Please...

Customizing a morphing notification icon by
Milhouse Van Houten
This may be impossible, but I thought I'd ask.
I have a program, DU Meter, which is a tray icon program that due to its
nature (bandwidth measurement) will never have the same tooltip information
twice--or almost never, anyway. Unfortunately, Vista (or XP for that matter)
relies upon that tooltip information to determine how to act upon any of the
"Show," "Hide," "Hide when inactive"...

How to turn off Disc Cleanup by
Disc Cleanup
Hey there. My windows vista has disc cleanup automatically set to run.
Around every 30 days, I find my media content licenses have been deleted. I
have Windows Media Player 11, which does not allow the backing up of licenses.
How do I turn off the automatic Disc Cleanup feature? Or where do I find
the file where licenses are kept so that I can back them up?

Error solution says Norton/Symantec by
Jan
Vista is constantly doing mini-dumps, very unstable. Once re-started, I click
on pop up for a solution to the mini-dump problem encountered. Recently it
has begun to tell me the cause was Norton/Symantec anti-virus, which I do NOT
have as my virus protection (I have Vista compatible CA). The solution
instructs me to update my Norton anti-virus. Norton was not an add-on freebie
with my...

WIA has stopped working - after resume by
grubertm@gmail.com
When resuming Vista (32 bit Business) from sleep I frequently get an
error pop up saying "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) has stopped
working". The service is automatically being restarted so scanning
afterwards works fine. It's just an annoyance that I would like to get
rid of. Any suggestions ?

Has anybody tried this program with Vista & does it work well?
Also, I'm not sure what I should shut down in the back ground. I don't want

Thanks!

svchost.exe writting allot to the HD/Readyboost. by
JesterDev
I thought ready boost was going to speed things up, instead it's slowed thing
down allot. Then svchost.exe has been slowing boot up times allot even before
I started to use ready boost.
Problem is that I have a system process that is using svchost.exe and it is
slowing down my computer so much during the first 5-10 minutes of starting up
that I can barley move my mouse around the screen!...

SP1 Opinions by
CJM[_2_]
I've just installed SP1 (via MSDN) and I'm pleased to say it appears to do
the trick...or at least so far so go.
I've just copied a 200MB file from PC to server and it went like a rocket!
In addition, I'm noting a responsiveness in the odd application; for
example, I use Windows Mail to access USENET, and under SP1, I'm in and
starting browsing much quicker - pre-SP1 there would be a slight...

SP1 kills boot time! by
Diamontina Cocktail
Installed the SP1 sent to me in the Windows updates a few days ago and
machine has been slow to boot and generally slow ever since. It was very
much faster before SP1.
I have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine, 2 gigs ram, more than enough disk
space left (320gig drive half full) etc. The only change was putting in SP1.
Thinking that this could have been some sort of stuffup between Mcafee AV...

Vista Business SP1 still as bad as pre SP1 by
Diamontina Cocktail
I installed SP1 on my Business Edition Vista last night.
What I had pre SP1 was when I go to Control Panel and change the view to
Medium Icons, it changes the view to every other folder I open also to
Medium Icons. In order to show the view in Details format as I want in some
folders, I have to change Control Panel to do that. Visiting Control Panel
at all actually meant that any Details...

Windows Vista update caused errors by
Tracy H.[_2_]
The update for the Intel Chipset that automatically downloaded (yes I've
changed the automatic part to notify now) has caused me to get a "hkcmd.exe -
Bad Image" error message upon start up. I'll get this message twice and then
won't get it again till I start up the next time. The msg says:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains an error. Try...
