Possibility of performance increase for any particular workload by disabling swap? by Roof Fiddler
A question for whomever understands Vista's memory subsystem: Is it possible that performance would increase for any particular workload is swap is disabled? A workload I have in mind is of a user who runs a program which uses a large amount of memory to perform its own agressive caching (independent of Windows's file cache) of its own data files, with the result that Windows decides to swap...

I have my hard drive partitioned with Windows XP and program files only on the C: partition. My docs, music and temp files all have their own partitions. I want to install Vista RC 1. What problems am I likely to encounter? I am aware of software compatibility issues but am more concerned with how to get both OS's running on the one computer.

Athlon 64 stuck at half speed under Vista by Roof Fiddler
Running Vista build 5536 on an Athlon 64, even when (for whatever reason) my CPU usage is pegged at 100%, the Reliability and Performance Monitor reports that the CPU is running at 50% Maximum Frequency. On Win XP on the same system, AMD's dashboard software shows that that during heavy CPU usage, the processor runs at full speed, and at all other times runs at half speed. But the dashboard...

Quick Launch by Bob Holmes
Is there a way to move the Quick Launch Bar to the left side. Not the whole Task Bar just the Quick Launch Bar. I have always been able to do this prior releases of Windows.

CPU Load problem by Yoavb
Vista RC1 - When launching Task manager it constantly shows 40%-60% CPU load, even when no other application is running. System (NT kernel & System) process takes around 10%, svchost takes 20%-30% and System Idle process is around 50% (this one takes no less then 97% on my XP, same hardware). Is this normal? TIA

MS Office 2007 activation in Vista RC1 by Jan
I have a problem with the activation of MS Office 2007 Beta in Vista CR1. When I try to activate MS Office 2007 the following error message keeps coming up: "A communication error has occurred. Your request cannot be processed at this time. Please try again in a few minutes". I had no difficulty activating Office 2007 in Vista Beta or Windows XP. Can anyone help?

RC1 and WMI - mising classes? by DewBoy3d
Been fooling around trying to create a gadget for the sidebar to display network activity. In previous versions of windows where WMI was available I would query Win32_PerfFormattedData_TCPIP_NetworkInterface but this seems to be unavailable in RC1. Has it been renamed or removed? Specifically I am looking for BytesSentPersec and BytesReceivedPersec. Any ideas? or did I just not look hard...

Continuous Hard Drive Activity by Robert Schoultz
Despite all nice ideas in here I just want to bring something up that could cause this behaviour. RAM. If your memory is full, Windows will start paging inactive areas of the RAM onto the harddrive to free up some space in the ram modules, thus creating a lot of harddrive activity. I know that Vista got 8 times more (yes 8 times!) RAM requirement than it's predecessor Windows XP (min....

vista enable write back cache by Keith Adamik
I have 2 sata western digital hard drives using intel's raid. in xp I could load intel matrix manager and have more control over the raid. but in vista I don't show that option and if I right click in device manager on the hard drives, I see 2 check boxes that will allow for advanced write back cache option, but it shows my hard drives don't support that. What hard drives do support it...

Permission to install .dll file? Where do I do that? by Prose
I have been running RC1 for 4 days now and overall, really like it. One problem that I have run in to, however, is getting WinX DVD Ripper to run. I get an error message about a .dll file missing so downloaded the file but when I went to save it in my windows/system directory, it won't save as it says it must have administrator permission. Well I am the administrator and I want anything that...
