Changed a system variable accidentally. Please help by
Tony
Hello,
I accidentally changed a part of a system variable for the temp and tmp
directory.
Can someone tell me what is supposed to be there?
You can get there by going to your control panel, then going to system, then
clicking on advanced system settings, then click on the advanced tab, and
finally click on the environment variables.

Deleting the beta version by
BEH1230
I have finally updated the beta ultimate to the Business version. I had
various problems with it.
When I installed the beta version, I started from scratch. And I split my
hard drive into two sections. Which was fine for the time, until I deciced
the install the new version. I only had the update version so I couldn't
reformat the hard drive. I was told that I could not go from Vista...

Minimum graphics card to get graphics WEIs of 3.0? 5.9? by
Alan Cobb
Anyone know the minimum cost for a DirectX 9 graphics card that can
achieve a graphics /gaming graphics WEI of 3.0? 5.0? 5.9? To get
Aero on Vista you apparently need a minimum of 3.0, while 5.9 is the
current maximum possible. Would an existing "gamer" $200 ($150?
$120?) DX9 card be able to get a graphics / gaming graphics WEIs of
5.9? Any model recommendations?
Thanks,
Alan

Explorer.exe growing! by
Iron Feliks
When Vista Ultimate 64 bit starts up, explorer.exe takes up about 15 MB.
After about 6 hours of rather mundane tasks such as web browsing, email and
moving some files from one drive to another, explorer.exe takes up 149 MB of
memory.
Anyone know why this might be happening.

no response - Problem Reports & Solutions by
Dale Networkguy
Today after having trouble with a MSN game it asked to "close program go
online to check for solutions?" and I said OK. This game was Vista capable.
The working of the game isn't the main issue; rather that when I manually
invoke the Problem Reports & Solutions tool it now no longer appears. It
matters not how long of time is allowed; it just doesn't appear. After a
restart there is no...

How to find out your Ready Boost memory speed by
Bob
Just in case anyone wants to now what the tested speed is of a device used
for Ready Boost on your Vista system, it can be seen in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EMDMgmt
Maybe there's an easier way to get this info ?...I haven't found it yet.

Image Backup In Vista by
D. Spencer Hines
After the user has backedup up his entire C: Drive to an external HDD using
Vista can he then go to that image backup, look at individual files and
folders, open them up -- then copy both files and folders individually, at
will, to some other drive, including the C: drive from which they were
backed up?
Thank you.

3D Flip by
makin-moves
I just got a new computer a few days ago, and now the 3D flip is not working?
I have no idea why it is not anymore, it was before, and now I just get the
little window with small icons in it to choose from. I know I could press
ALT+TAB, or the windows+TAB, neither show the 3D flip, just the same thing
with the box of icons. Also when I press the icon in the taskbar the same
thing happens...

Choice of backup software by
Clipper
When I bought my new computer running Vista Home Premium, I also bought an
external hard drive for backing up. That drive came with its own backup
software --Retrospect 7.5 by EMC. I assumed that's what I should use but now
learn that they haven't issued a driver compatible with Vista. I now see
that Vista has its own backup software. Is there any reason I shouldn't use
the Vista backup...

explorer and taskbar won't open on startup. also, weird audio prob by
Ken
Hi, all
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix a weird problem
that just started happening to me today
When I boot up my computer, I do not get a desktop or a taskbar open on the
screen. I get an Explorer screen and that's it. I am able to open Task
Manager and, if I shut down Explorer.exe, the taskbar will open and
everything seems to work fine.

Performance Rating by
Mark
My performance rating gave me a score once during install... and then after
that quit working.
All I have now is the original rating, no way to update it and just the page
where it says not sure where to start when I click on it.
Any suggestions on how to get it back to work properly?

Longhorn Is A Different OS From Vista? by

VERY Interesting.
Thank you.
From some of the comments about Vista, we hear "everything has been moved
around and renamed" -- which sounds rather loony.
Any truth to that?

Increasing file copy speed by
Azumaniac
I am dismayed at the reduced file copy speed in Vista, as opposed to XP.
This is due to the fact that Vista must first calculate precisely the number
and size of the files to be copied so that it can report the estimated time
and transfer speed for the copy process. If you are trying to copy or
transfer a large block of files, Vista might set there and putter around
calculating the...
