Local Session Manager Service - Excessive Handle Count? by jminiman
Hey all, I know that when a process is using a lot of handles, that means it's consuming a lot of resources. So I'm pretty surprised that lsm.exe (Local Session Manager Service) consumes between 15,000 and 30,000 handles on my machine! In XP, I usually have 15,000 handles open on a system with lots of applications open. Why would lsm.exe be using so many handles? Is this possibly a concern?

HELP! Can't get localhost to work without "Error 500" message! by Larry S.
After using Windows 2000 for several years, I recently purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. Since I do some simple web development on a couple of sites I have (I use Macromedia Homesite to write the code), I set up IIS. In Windows 2000 I used the PWS interface, which was delightfully simple. Since Vista doesn't seem to have any equivalent to PWS, at least as far as I can...

all files saving to recovery drive by scuba_steve43111
My computer is 2 weeks old and my Recovery Drive is almost full (.99GB free of 9.71GB). I have no idea why it is saving everything here instead of the C Drive which has 191 GB of free space. I am obviously new with computers, and am using Vista Home Premium for the first time. Why is my recovery so full, and why isn't it saving to the Local (C:)? Any and all responses would be greatly...

Display crash by Ratan Cyril
I just installed Vista Ultimate. But when I turn off media center, my screen becomes green and blue-ish with lots of flickering and coloured stripes. The same thing happened when I tried to put the PC into sleep mode. The only solution is to restart the PC, and even then I don't get any error messages by Windows. My best guess is that this is due to a driver problem. I have a nVidia 7900 GT...

Vista Recovery by Puppy Breath
I think all HP PCs put the recovery files on that D: partition. It's set to the size it needs to be to hold those files. You really don't want to mess with it until you've read the HP instructions on what it is and how to use it. "Winnowill" wrote in message ... I just got a new PC yesterday (HP...

Question about windows update history. by Mahesh
Hi, Its not that important, but still curious about an imp windows update that is failed on vista-home premium machine. MSXML 4.0 SP2 security update (KB927989) Although the update is downloaded and is installed manually, just checking if Windows update history can be cleared which is still indicating that the update is 'failed'.

After my most recent reboot, my volume, network and power icons didn't appear next to the clock. I checked in the properties, and the checkboxes to show these icons are grayed out. How can I fix this? I need those icons back! Thanks.

recommended backup software by tonj
for anyone looking for a backup solution for a Vista PC I'd recommend Acronis TrueImage Home 10. It's good software and it will make a boot CD for you, which will even work with external USB hard drives. The interface looks just like Windows XP and after wrestling with Norton Ghost floppies for years this program for me is a breath of fresh air and very cheap for the backup power you get. What I...

Disappointed with Vista on Dell Computer by Puppy Breath
It shouldn't be minutes for anything. If you ask me, Dell dropped the ball somewhere along the line. It's not that difficult to build a machine that runs Vista perfectly. Reboot during Complete PC backup using DVD for storage by boxy
Hey, I'm about ready to tear my hair out on this one. I get about 4 to 5 DVD burned during the "Complete PC Backup" process coming back into my computer room to swap DVD disk's for the backup process, but come back to find after 4 to 5 disks, the computer has re-booted! Disks show files on them, except for the last one. "empty", no over-heating issues on tower, no incomplete back up showing,...

Event Viewer: ACPI error....need help please by Walter Cohen
I have a clean Vista Home Pro install on a new Biostar TForce 6100-939 mobo. I cannot get ACPI and hibernate/sleep to work as far as waking the system up using either keyboard or mouse...but that's another problem. Ever since I installed Vista last week I daily get at least 5 ACPI error events and I could use some help in diagnosing the error. Maybe this might even be related as to why I...

RAM Usage by Dustin Harper
Windows caches a lot of the core OS. It makes Windows seem a little faster and more responsive. When you open a program that needs that memory, it unloads things from the cache and uses that RAM. So, it's not actually unavailable. -- Dustin Harper http://www.vistarip.com
