compress hard drive by Brenda
I just read a post that nobody in this day and age would even consider compressing their hard drive. Well I did. It did free up space but is now very slow. Is there any way to fix this error in judgment and undo what I did? My son had some choice words for me all of them meant "stupid". He said to copy of the files that I needed to open up disk space. I work with a lot of photos and didn't...

Windows Photo Gallery after installing SP1 by Charles W Davis
Windows Vista Home Premium. Used by club member and not connected to the Internet at any time since purchase in May 1007. Some "wierd" events that he couldn't explain were happening, so I placed SP1 on a DVD and gave it to him to update his system. Now he cannot open some, not all, images in Windows Photo Gallery that were scanned from his 4 X 5 transparancies. They will open in Photoshop...

app. specific "Disable Visual Themes" bug - need workaround by samej71
Hello, I believe I found a bug in Vista (Business). I have an application that has an issue with the Aero interface, and a workaround for it is to turn off the "Desktop Composition" feature in Vista. I can do this system-wide, and the application works great. But, for obvious reasons I'd rather leave desktop composition on for the entire system and use Vista's per-application configuration...

Cannot Uninstall Vista SP1 Beta by Fybo
Hi, I installed SP1 Beta which resulted in a BSOD and corrupted something somewhere that wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet (even using the connection wizard). I have tried to uninstall (as previously recommended) the SP1 without success. It always fails to uninstall and does the "reverting changes" thing. I have tried the uninstall in safe mode, removed all my AV and...

How do you restore a Vista Business backup on a Vista Home PC by Russ
I had a "work" laptop running Vista Business, from an upgrade disc, as XP had originally been installed. In line with good practice, I ran regular backups onto an external drive, from the MS software facility provided. So, following a recent crash, I bought a new laptop, and accepted it with Vista Home Premium. I tried to restore the back-up and even using the advanced restore, it could not...

8 gb RAM w/ D975XBX2 + Vista 64 = No Go :-( by Russell
I'm trying to get 8 GB to run stable with this motherboard and so far it's not working. When Kingston branded RAM would not work I ordered the exact 2 GB Crucial RAM recommended on the Intel's support site and it's not much better. As soon as I engage in any intensive activity (like downloading and installing Vista updates) the computer will reboot. Intel tech support escalated the issue and...

0x080070570 in Vista Home Premium with SP1 by Peter
I get 0x080070570 when I try to either copy or transfer a file from several hard drives. It affects ALL files and is getting to be a pain. It does not stop the files from working, but just stops the transfer to another drive. I have 5 drives in all and the other 3 are fine. There is only Vista on the system and I want to transfer files that I wish to keep and wipe the rest with a fresh...

Monitor not shutting off after 15 minutes by SELPilot
David;17586 Wrote: You may have some processes running in the background that Windows is recognizing as activity on the user's part. Check to see what you have running. Absolutely true! I had exactly the same problem and decided to see what was running in background. For me it was the software for the Logitech Harmony Remote. Run "msconfig", click on the "Startup" tab and unheck ...

Best format for ReadyBoost by FiOS Dave
I am using a 2GB SD card for ReadyBoost, and want to know what is the best format to use for quickest operation. I've tried FAT, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS, but don't see much difference (except for available space!) Thanks in advance, Dave

Stops Working by MichaelBN
By now it should be obvious that, under the Vista operating system, I have Home Premium, there is a severe overall, general "has stopped working" problem. Thus far I've experienced: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "Word has stopped working" "Sherlock Holmes Nemesis (Adventure Company) has stopped working" "Outlook has stopped working"

How do I allocate more space to backup drive D? by theislandman
My backup drive D in Windows Vista is full up and I can't seem to be able to empty it or allocate more space to it. It only has 9.99GB of space allocated to it and my computer is now complaining that it can't backup. Does anyone know how to allocate more space to it, or should I just delete everything on it?

Recovering space on C by flammi
I downloaded a freeware incinerator and chose to shred the free space on C in order to get rid of all the files that had been deleted, but were still on the HD waiting to be overwritten. Since then I show practically no space left on C, even thou before I used the incinerator only about 1/3 of the drive was used. Does anyone know what I can do to recover this space? -- PBF

Insert blank CD/DVD, get numerous Event ID 51's? by Milhouse Van Houten
I noticed that whenever I insert either a blank CD or DVD that the System Log fills with, respectively, either 5 or 10 of these: Event ID: 51 "An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation." The Event Viewer help indicates it's just an informational message and no action is required, but I'd like to know what's causing it since it's filling up the log. It's...

High HDD Activity after Startup by Gideon_CC
After I have logged into my account, I have my statup entries load fine. After AVG and MSN etc have loaded, the HDD activity seems to be constant for 2-3 minutes afterwards. During this time, if I look at the Reliability and Performance Monitor for Disk, I see loads of files randomly on there, like system files, some program files like Office and the odd document I have. The IO priority is...
