what process is svchost.exe associated with by
Jeremy
In my network, sometimes my user's laptops freeze during the logon script.
Well the computers don't actually freeze, they just don't move beyond the
logon script. When I go into task mamager, cpu is running at 100% (2 gb ram
and very new processors) and the process taking up the most memory (48,748k)
is svchost.exe. I think it's associated with the windows search indexing but
I'm not...

Windows Explorer Crashes, Restarts Every other day or so by
kokowheelman
Hi everyone,
The forums have helped me tweak my Vista quite a bit. I have a problem,
however, with something else other than tweaking my boot, my L2 Cache
size and what not. When I open Control Panel, sometimes Windows Explorer
dies on me and restarts. I have a baller computer, so there is really no
issue with the computer specs and running Vista. When I open the Control
Panel, there is nothing...

Securing a Wireless Connection by
Paul Calcagno
Not sure if this is the correct group to post this question so please
correct me if I'm posting to the wrong Newsgroup.
My son's got a Vista laptop running off a wireless Linksys router. It's been
running great for almost 2 years but for some reason his wireless connection
recently went from `secured' to `unsecured'. Have no idea what caused this
change. Nothing was done to the router. Can...

System health report by

I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of this problem
including everything that is stated in the tutorial section of this site
but can't seem to resolve this issue. When I try to run the report I get
the attached message and the report won't run. Could this be because I
have added new drives to the...

Disk backups after Vista SP2 update by
Robert Miles
On my 32-bit Vista machine, backup times have increased
dramatically after installing the Vista SP2 update - at least
twice as long as before. Since I run BOINC projects
nearly 24 hours a day, other than pauses for backups,
virus scans and the like, any assumptions that I won't notice
the increase aren't true for me.
I've even seen signs that the backups are pausing whenever
the screen coes...

Vista 64bit problem with I.E. download by
Gumba
I just purchased a computer with Vista Home Premium 64bit processor
system. I downloaded the latest Firefox. Both I.E.7 and Firefox worked
great. Then I.E.8 downloaded itself and I could use neither Firefox nor
I.E. as browsers. I had to get help to use my computer. I loved
Firefox and want to get it back. Would it be safe to try again or
should I wait until a perfect Firefox for 64bit...

Large fize sizes slow performance... by
Iain[_8_]
Hi,
I'm running vista SP1 and store a lot of VERY large files, 29gb is not
unusual.
These files are mainly video AVI files.
Each time I access the directory which hold these files my systems hangs for
about 10 minutes and then works again. If I move my mouse over one of these
files, it seems to work, but shortly afterwards it hangs again.

No Windows Live Messenger after SP2 by
Questor[_2_]
The very first time I rebooted after installing Vista Home Premium SP2
my Live Messenger application refused to start. Now, after several
reboots I still will not start. Is this being caused by SP2, or some
other sort of problem? Nothing new, other than SP2, has been installed
and it was working fine just before SP2.

Start application minimized by
Llew Ralph
I have found it impossible to enable an application to start minimized using
Vista Home Premium.
Although a shortcut to the application has been created in the Startup
folder and its run type is set to 'minimized', on system startup the
application always starts in 'normal window' mode.
This applies to any application.
Is minimized startup achievable?

Autoexec.bat file by
scooterman
I have tried to install an old DOS based program on my Vista based computer.
The program has installed on all previous versions of windows. All it did
was add the same two lines to my Autoexec.bat file every time I tried to
install it.
How can I delete these lines from my Autoexec.bat file?
I can go to the file, highlight the lines and delete them, but when I try to
close out, they all...

keyboard inadvertently changed by

Hello there, A 2 year old neighbor kid stepped on my computer and apparently
messed up the way windows works. Let's see if I can give you a couple of
examples: When I click on icons on my desktop instead of launching the
program the properties pane comes up, like I have right clicked and hit
properties.
Here is another: in Internet Explorer when I try to type in an address, lets
say...
