My granddau has an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC with 3G Ram, AMD Turion 64x2 running Vista Home Premium. She has been continually unplugging laptop without a proper shutdown first. She may have logged off sometimes. Both administrator and her user screens have been solid blue with a taskbar. I tried restoring to earlier date on administrator side & got the desktop icons back, but a popup said...

Away Mode by foxycat[_3_]
I recently bought a UPS (APC ES700) and have been trying to set up its accompanying software, PowerChute Personal Edition. I downloaded the correct Vista version. The documentation states that PowerChute requires Hibernation enabled, so I have been trying to get Hibernation to work on my PC, without much success. APC Support have said I need to turn off Away Mode to use normal Hibernation...

Vista Business - hard disk running constantly by Abi
I have Vista Business installed, and the hard disk is running constantly. I have implemented several suggestions posted on this site, but none have really helped. Does anyone have any idea if anything else can be done, or what may be causing the problem?

Watched news in red ink by t-4-2[_99_]
Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1. WLM 14.0.8050.1202 I mark all the posts I started or replied to as " watched news ". They appear in red. BEFORE I installed SP1, which was 6 hours ago, all the replies under the " watched news" were in red when I viewed them. AFTER SP1, the original threads are still in red, but all subsequent replies are now in black. Is that normal for SP1 ? Thank you. t-4-2

Cannot do anything until drives spin by Moonraker0
Whenever my computer starts, I can't do anything with it until my drives spin: floppy...CD...floppy, and then it immediately becomes accessible. This is annoying because it only happens after a minute or more of being in Windows. I almost always have in a CD, almost never a floppy. This has recently become even more of a problem because it apparently breaks the operation of certain...

SP1 by t-4-2[_99_]
SP1 was downloaded and installed without a glitch. SP1 was offered to me via Windows Update on September 2008. I hid it until today and decided to install after all. I do have a question : the size of my SP1 was only 53.8 MB, took me less than 2 hours ( 5:46 pm - 7:20 pm ). The size and time required were not what I was told. Any explanation ? Thank you. t-4-2

I set chkdsk /f in three three ways but it does not check the drive on reboot; it goes all the way to vista as usual. a) opened a comand window with admin privileges, run chkdsk /f, tells me that will do it on reboot but does not, b) found chkdsk.exe on explorer, right click on the file, run as admin, same thing, c) on explorer right click on drive c:, properties, click on the button for check...

What's going on with Microsoft PC Advisor? by goorambatman
What's going on with Microsoft PC Advisor? There is no activity on the Microsoft Connect Page, the link to download it has been removed and every one in the news group is wondering what is going on with this project. Has it been scrapped? Is it finished and the public release has been delayed? What is goin on with MPA? Let's hope this is released because this piece of software is one of...

Moving windows with mouse in Vista by Augustin Varnav
Hello, I recently encountered a problem in Vista when I tried to move a window on the screen with the mouse. When I click the title bar, my screen gets divided in three parts, one for the upper half and two in the other half and, instead of moving the window, the system puts it in one of these places. Then, I can only mive the window from one place to another, is like a snap-to-grid...

Can't terminate processes by Kirk
At times I have a process that simply stops. Mainly it's been either Firefox or Outlook 2007. I attempt to terminate the process in Windows Task Manager to no avail. The only way to recover is to go through a reboot which is, needless to say, a pain in the derriere. I just completed building my system which consists of the following: OS: Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 (build...

memtest.exe by No One
Good day everyone. When I launch the Administrative Tools/Memory Diagnostic Tool in Vista Home Premium the computer reboots, you get the BIOS screen, then what appears to be a DOS error screen that says file \boot\memtest.exe is missing or corrupt. It's NOT at all missing as you can easily see it on the C:\boot directory, and the version appears to be from SP1. How can I run the memtest...

Geting terrible performance. System chugs on hard drive a full several minutes after GUI appears by Peter Dickason
Got a new Vista laptop last year which was a terrible mistake. I have not been happy with it at all. My problem is the computer takes a full 10 minutes to complete starting up. I assumed this was because it was short on memory and was paging like nuts. It only came with 1 gig. So I upgraded it to 4 gig but to my surprise, this did not make much of a difference. It still takes several...
