Microsoft Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall. TO THE TOP by I.C. Greenfields
Some of us want to choose what "gets out" and what doesn't. And this info doesn't work since there is nowhere to make such a change in the Windows Firewall window that comes up. Configure it - HOW? Can someone explain how it's configured to actually work without being a programmer writing strange unknown confusing rules for everything that wants to connect to the net? If not, can someone...

what does Windows Defender really protects and scans for? by A.H.
What does Windows Defender really protects and scans for? Does Windows Defender protects against all the known virus, spyware & adware? That means I no longer need Norton or MacAfee or Micro Trend Antivirus?

Vista privlidges and VB6 by Kevin Provance
Gents (and ladies if there are any here), prepare for a challenge. First, I am cross-posting this to what I think is the appropriate Vista group because I think we as VB 6 programmers could learn some techniques (or vice versa) if there is indeed an answer to this delimma. As a side note, I am dyslexic and I try to catch my spelling errors but always seem to miss some, so please forgive...

Recommend a Security Suite by razor_303
I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2007, for both my recently purchased laptop and my older desktop computer. I have seen the reviews for the 2008 version and I'm not very confident in getting it. I wanted to get some recommendations on security software that I can buy that includes the whole package, like a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. I know to stay away from...

UAC - How do I configure this to bring some sanity to my desktop? by Joseph Geretz
I'm just starting to work with Vista. My profile: I am a developer, 20 years experience in general, working with Windows for about the past decade. Basically, I know what I am doing. Tell me why it is a 'good thing' for me to have to confirm every time I want to open up the Services window, or the Computer Management window (just to cite a couple of immediately evident examples). OK, so once...

Viability of power-line intrusions by FYIGMO
If I connect my Vista laptop to a power outlet in public, such as an airport terminal, library, or coffee shop, how viable is the threat from someone gaining access to my computer via a power-line network? If the threat is viable today, what is the best method of stopping it? I know many people will say this is too unlikely and that other security threats are of much more concern to the...

How do I disable the Security Center notice about my UAC being off by rowanc88
Every single time I log in to Windows, that bloody little pop-up comes in the notification area saying that my UAC is off and that this is a horrible problem. I know it's off. I turned it off. Why the hell would I be unaware of that? So my question is, how do I stop that annoying notice coming up every single time I start Windows?

Does Vista need extra software for security? by Stan Kay
Within a short while of adopting Windows XP Pro I experienced a series of security issues (viruses, Trojans etc) and so quickly searched for Security software. I eventually adopted Zone Alarm Security Suite and have used it without problems for a few years. Now to the point of this question. I moved to Windows Vista Ultimate on the 30th November 2006 and, perhaps luckily, have encountered...

Suggested Security by BChat
I will be purchasing Vista Ultimate Full Edition at the end of the month. I plan to use AVG Free for AV protection (I have for years with XP). I also run Spybot S&D, AdAware, Spywareblaster, and SuperAntispyware. Which, if any, are suggested for, or needed with Vista. I understand the Vista Firewall is fine and there is no need for anything else. TIA BChat

Windows Defender 0x800106ba by Sven Pran
My daughter suddenly experiences: Windows Defender: "Error Code 0x800106ba Application failed to initialize" This is a fairly new machine (running Vista Home Premium) and it was delivered with McAfee virus protection installed. The initial McAfee license is about to expire so she renewed that license for a permanent licence today. There may of course be a connection here, but I fail to see...

KB931768 problem - ***solved*** by Richard Urban
I had posted in a couple of various threads that I was also affected by this update (KB931768) under both Vista and Windows XP. Under Vista, Windows Mail had become so slow as to be almost impossible to use. Clicking on a post in the news groups took about 2-4 seconds to show the text in the bottom. Replying to a post also took about 2-4 seconds to bring us a usable reply window. Shutting...

Window blocked startup programs by Tim
When I start Vista, I always get a popup that says Windows blocked some startup programs. When I go into Windows Defender to find out what is being blocked, I get the list of programs loaded at startup, and each is either designated "Permitted" or "Not yet classified." Even the "Not yet classified" programs are being loaded. So how do I find out which ones Windows is blocking?

Would you want THESE GUYS touching your PC? by jim
As you probably know, Geek Squad is owned by Best Buy and operates right out of their stores. So, it is reasonable to assume that Best Buy sets the tone for how Geek Squad operates (except for the influence that Microsoft's $200,000,000 cash infusion gives them, of course). Seeing as how the tone for the overall Best Buy/Geek Squad operations are set by Best Buy, it would behoove people to...
