PatchGuard and Vista x86 by
Lorne Smith
Question... What with all the recent furore over PatchGuard in Vista x64 and
Symantec & McAfee's inability to do what Kapersky and Sapho's do, I found
myself wondering something...
WHY is there no PatchGuard in the 32bit version? I saw a vague mention
about backwards compatibility, but pfft to that I say. Properly written
software doesn't need kernel access, and quite frankly, I'd like my...

Trend's PC-cillin Internet Security--now updated by
k_fonda
Has anybody noticed that Trend has updated their Beta suite and it now does
not expire untill 12-31-06 (was originally going to expire the end of
Octiober). It supposedly works with any version of Vista and is now version
14.56 (used to be 14.55). I like OneCare Beta but there are a lot of people
who used Trend which did not work with RC2 so this should make them happy.
Just wanted to give a...

Windows Defender will not complete scan on Windows Vista build 560 by
lgurleyatgmail.com
Windows defender is reporting that I have not scanned my computer for 17
days. It then says that "We recommend that you schedule Windows Defender to
scan your computer each day" Which at the bottom of the Windows Defender home
tab I can see it is sceduled to scan everyday at 2:00 AM. There is a Scan
Now button on that screen. When this button is pressed Defender starts a

UAC and permissions on HKLM registry by
Doug Walch
In the XP environment, we have an asset management program that sucks the
machines serial number out of the BIOS, and subsequently writes the value to
the registry in the HKLM hive. I'm wondering if this will be possible with
VISTA AND UAC. Will it be necessary to change the permissions on the
specific registry key (during the imaging process) in order for this to
occur without the user...

ANS: "What's the deal with UAC (Windows Needs Your Permission scre by
sbryce61
I am not a computer programmer. I do not know how to access behind the scene
programs.
When I start internet explorer, it does not ask for permission.
I would like to know how to make internet explorer, an administrator.

ANS: "What's the deal with UAC (Windows Needs Your Permission scre by
Tim
Jimmy,
Maybe you can help me...I'm trying to install HP Printer driver and
software. I'm logged in as Administrator and running RC2. The install fails
with an error of "Can't use 'run as administrator' to install this software".
It gives the same error if I actually use the "run as administrator" switch
to run it.
Any ideas?

Blocked Startup Programs not Blocked by
cvp
(Vista RC1-64)I added a program (Highpoint Raid Manager) into the startup
folder.
Now Windows defender tells me on boot that it has blocked the program which
it shows as "Not Yet Classified". In fact it hasn't blocked it at all (which
is good!)
If I try to select the program in the Software Explorer list of startup
programs, I'm only offered the options of "Remove" or "Disable". How am I...

Can UAC settings be made permanent? by

I participate in the Stanford University "protein folding" distributed
computing project. I need to run a command line program called
FAH502-Console.exe. I put it in a directory in Program Files, put a shortcut
on the desktop and marked the shortcut "Run as Administrator." When I click
on the shortcut icon, I still get two warnings every time I run the program:

ISA 2004 Authentication by
Julian Stone
I applogise if this has been asked\answered before but:
From my vista rc2 workstation, whenever I attempt to browse the web etc. I'm
presented with a proxy server authentication box.
In some respects this is to be expected as our systems require
authentication to use the ISA 2004 server, but no matter what combination of
username\password I use, authentication always fails.
That is until I...

Firewalls for Vista by
MB@MI, USA
What aftermarket firewalls function properly under Vista? Dont get me wrong,
I feel Microsoft has done a great job with thier built-in firewall, but as an
advanced user I much prefer two features to my firewall: a) easier rule
implimentations/port allowances/etc, and b) the ability to either view live
or view logs of actual packet/ip/transport information.
Under normal circumstances I have...

AV and Firewall apps by
Kuane
Can someone provide a list of which AV and Firewall apps work with Vista
5728?
I read the post concerning AVG Free needing to be installed using
Compatability mode but was curious what else may be available. I always
preffered Zone Alarm but when I attempt to install v 6.5.722 I get the error
message this product has issues with Windows Vista.
TIA,
