Security Center Problems (Vista Ultimate) by Peter
Vista's Security Center is not showing my McAfee products (Vista compatible I assure you - they showed OK in my beta RC2 Vista) plus it says that Windows Defender is off, but it is very much on. When I click "Turn on" all it does is check for updates. As I'm having this trouble plus intermittent connectivity problems and can never view my internet connection or network for some unknown reason...

Bitlocker Key on internal SD reader by Dcoolidge
My laptop has an internal SD reader and is registered as such (not a usb drive). Is there anyway I can fool BitLocker into thinking its a USB drive? It is still removable memory, and it would be much easier than a usb drive.

Recommend Anti-Spyware app for VISTA by gizbug
Use to run Spysweeper and loved it. Just upgraded to Vista 64bit, and Spysweeper no longer works with 64bit version. A) Are there any true 64bit AntiSpyware apps out there? B) If not, which 32bit works with 64bit vista and is recommended? I've heard a lot of pro/cons on Ad-Aware SE Professional. -- gizbug

Weary of Norton by LewBob
I recently bought an Everex notebook with Vista Home Premium, which included a 90-day free Norton trial. I have had Norton on my older laptop and found that it seems to consume a lot of resources and takes a very long time to load. I would like to find the anti-virus software that's effective but uses the least amount of RAM, has the smallest downloads for updates (I'm stuck on a dial-up)...

Aministrator Required - I DON"T THINK SO!!! by Lester Stiefel
Just installed Windows Vista. Upon trying to use windows update and Microsoft update, I get a 0x** error, claiming I do not have admin rights. I have disabled User account protection, and am proceeding to down load these manually. Is this your answer to security. Keep this up and I'll defect to Linux. At least I know what to expect there!! -- Lester Stiefel

UAC does not accept Banxafe Smart Card Reader by E Pericoloso Sporgersi
For my home banking I have this external USB smart card reader (Ingenico Banxafe) with numeric pad. The secure website of my bank insists on using Internet Explorer AND Microsoft Virtual Machine to communicate with the smart card reader. If I turn UAC fully OFF, then my home banking works fine. But if UAC is turned ON, the home banking secure web site reports "Smart card reader not...

Bitlocker & offline defrag apps by Iuvenalis
Thought i'd share this. Sometimes the offline defrag facility in some 3rd party defrag apps doesn't work on 3rd party encrypted volumes. One reason for this is that the defrag app cannot lock the drive. I had been told that Perfectdisk offline defrag couldn't defrag a Bitlocker encrypted volume & that isn't true. Perfectdisk offline defrag will defrag the C volume without problems, but it...

CreateProcess for...The requested operation requires elevation by Anders strand-Holm
Hi, I am totally new to Vista. When launching a small application from the main programme I get this error: "CreateProcess for (path-and-application-name) has not been executed. The requested operation requires elevation" This, when running as administrator. I get the same error when running it as standard user (with non-admin rights). I have been informed I could change this policy (as...

Windows Defender is Corrupting Profile by Aaron Oneal
I'm having an issue that I've traced to Windows Defender. Periodically I noticed my stored network passwords were disappearing. After reviewing the event logs, I think it's occuring each time I get this message. Any suggestions (other than turn off WD)? - Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event" - System Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service"...

VirtualStore and application upgrades? by Hasse
Hi! I have a question on this: A program not intended for Vista get installed with elevated privs. as it should in the Program Files folder. A user later makes changes to, say, an INI file by using the applications GUI to make a preference change. The INI file then get virtualized since the user doesn't have write access to PF. So far so good.

Spyware software compatibility by Jackie D
Hi I'm about to upgrade to windows vista and I'd like to run AVG and Zone Alarm free editions. Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with either of these? If so, what could I use instead. Bulldog has been mentioned to me but I'm not familiar with it. Thanks -- Jackie D

Getting "website wants to open web content" when printing with IE7 by Ken Wallewein
Whenever I try to print using IE7 under Vista, I get a popup saying "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer." I have to click "allow". Every time. It's getting really annoying. Doesn't look like there's any way to turn that off specifically for printing, without reducing overall security. SURELY there's a way to allow pre-approved print without turning...
