ANS: "What's the deal with UAC (Windows Needs Your Permission scre by Tim
Jimmy, Maybe you can help me...I'm trying to install HP Printer driver and software. I'm logged in as Administrator and running RC2. The install fails with an error of "Can't use 'run as administrator' to install this software". It gives the same error if I actually use the "run as administrator" switch to run it. Any ideas?

ANS: "What's the deal with UAC (Windows Needs Your Permission scre by sbryce61
I am not a computer programmer. I do not know how to access behind the scene programs. When I start internet explorer, it does not ask for permission. I would like to know how to make internet explorer, an administrator. "Jimmy Brush" wrote: Hello, I've noticed that a lot of the questions in these newsgroups are either

UAC and permissions on HKLM registry by Doug Walch
In the XP environment, we have an asset management program that sucks the machines serial number out of the BIOS, and subsequently writes the value to the registry in the HKLM hive. I'm wondering if this will be possible with VISTA AND UAC. Will it be necessary to change the permissions on the specific registry key (during the imaging process) in order for this to occur without the user...

Windows Defender will not complete scan on Windows Vista build 560 by lgurleyatgmail.com
Windows defender is reporting that I have not scanned my computer for 17 days. It then says that "We recommend that you schedule Windows Defender to scan your computer each day" Which at the bottom of the Windows Defender home tab I can see it is sceduled to scan everyday at 2:00 AM. There is a Scan Now button on that screen. When this button is pressed Defender starts a scan and runs...

Trend's PC-cillin Internet Security--now updated by k_fonda
Has anybody noticed that Trend has updated their Beta suite and it now does not expire untill 12-31-06 (was originally going to expire the end of Octiober). It supposedly works with any version of Vista and is now version 14.56 (used to be 14.55). I like OneCare Beta but there are a lot of people who used Trend which did not work with RC2 so this should make them happy. Just wanted to give a...

PatchGuard and Vista x86 by Lorne Smith
Question... What with all the recent furore over PatchGuard in Vista x64 and Symantec & McAfee's inability to do what Kapersky and Sapho's do, I found myself wondering something... WHY is there no PatchGuard in the 32bit version? I saw a vague mention about backwards compatibility, but pfft to that I say. Properly written software doesn't need kernel access, and quite frankly, I'd like my...

AVG with RC2... by Mike
I know it's early days, but having managed to get AVG Free to work with build 5600 and 5728, I NOW can't get it working in RC2 5744. Anyone have any experience on this one yet? I've tried the usual XP comp. and admin. modes etc. Thanks. Haven't yet tried AVG 7.5 however, but I gather that's not a freebie! Mike

Angry IP Scanner by slegsonly
OK, I admit it, security on Vista is a pain in the ass and for all extents and purposes will drive me not to deploy to my users because of the hassels to allow things to run. I use Angry IP scanner to search for unused IP addresses, but in Vista when I try to launch it I get the message " Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions...

Gaining access to folders by Lloyd
I'm pretty frustrated with this UAC thing? I understand the reasons for it, but there has to be a better way to access things. In my case all my old files were stored in c:\windows.old folder...my music files i had in folders based on the band. So i have about 100 or so folders. everytime i want to access a folder i have to grant permission, and then it tells me permission denied go to...

This is also a problem on my Tecra M3. Experienced this with both RC1 and now RC2. I hope someone from Microsoft is reading, as this is a bit of a show-stopper for me considering upgrading my Tecra M3 and M4 laptops to Vista. Vista less secure in europe ? by KL
Is it in fact true we will get a different version in Europe or is it the same version all over that is "EU compliant" ? I'm not sure I like the idea of watering down security so that "security vendors" can access the Vista kernel. http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/6327/53/ Does this mean Vista in europe will be less secure ? If this is true I will buy my version from the US when the...
