No USB blocking tool in Vista by
Francisco
I thought that in this version there would be a tool to lock USB ports. Using
Local Security Policies you can se the access to CD Roms and drives but not
USB ports. In firms it is a known security issue. We are using PS/2 mice and
keyboards and using DEVICE LOCK (a non Microsoft tool) to block access. As it
is an important security issue, a lot of people thought that you would offer
a tool...

Jimmy-UAC by
Kerry Brown
I think that when Vista first comes out many early adopters will turn off
UAC. I agree this is a shame but it is a reality. As new computers are
purchased by people who are not early adopters but just average consumers
buying a computer this may change. The vast majority of these people will
not be able to figure out how to turn it off. They will phone their OEM
supplier, software comany, or...

Not allowing my program access by
Michael Lynch
Instead of using aim and msn messengers i use a program called Trillian. A
feature that trillian has is keeping log files of conversations i have
between friends, this feature is used all the time for me. But with UAC
turned on, trillian doesnt have access to create / edit the log file on my
hard drive. UAC never prompted me if i want to 'allow' access for it to do
this or anything, it...

Hello everyone,
I have a little problem. I installed MS Vista 5536 and re-installed AVG's Free Anti-virus version 7.1.0.405 and now every time I reboot Defender blocks it from starting up. I right click on blocked programs and click allow and it works fine, however on the next reboot its the same old problem.
Please Help. Thanks!

restrictions on hyperlinks, not admin account?? by
BetaTester9999
Hello,
I am running Vista RC1 with Office 2007 Beta, when I run Outlook either in
administrator or user mode, I would clik on a link in an email message or
even clik on help update, and I will receive a message that " This operation
has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please
contact your system administrator."
well I am the administrator/owner/creator etc. I...

Antivirus Solutions by
Richard Urban
Isn't it funny as how the "major" players in the home security field
(Symantec and McAfee) are bitc*ing and moaning about how Microsoft should
get out of the security field and leave security to the "people who know"
and have been doing it so well ( ???? ) for the last few years.
Yet, these big players have not, as of yet, released any program suites ( or
even a basic antivirus program) that...

C-Net/ Vista WGA by
Jeff
Well;
Not to anyone's suprise, but c/net just had an article about validation
in Vista.
Seems Vista will phone home periodically;to check if you're legit. Uhoh,
see a pattern/problem here? LOL
Not that I find anti-piracy initiatives bad; or that I am in any way
opposed to MSFT's legitimate attempt to stop piracy,
but again; the methodology is what concerns me. WGA in itself;presents no...

Windows needs your permition to continue - I am borred! by
Jimmy Brush
Hello,
Thank you for trying to secure my computer, but because I pretend to be a
security user, and I have a lot of software to install, and a lot of
settings to configure, I want to turn this off for now and run all
programs unrestricted. How do I do this? Kill explorer and run it as
Administrator? Any better ideas, setting or registry entry?
This feature is called UAC, or user...

Microsoft Certificate Services by
johnnytaco
Using Vista RC1, I'm testing requesting a certificate using Microsoft
Certificate Services. Going to my cert server,
http://server/certsrv/certrqma.asp, I get this error:
You need to install the following CSPs before the enrollment, Microsoft
Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0, and Microsoft Base Cryptographic
Provider 1.0.
Any ideas of where I can get this for Vista? I don't see anything...

Using Tend Micro PC-cillin by
StevenW
I uninstalled ver. 14.56 and rebooted and security center says PC-cillin is
still turned on as the firewall. Turned on Windows firewall and security
center says I'm using both firewalls. PC-pillin is not even installed any
longer. Any ideas? Using build 5728.

BitLocker, TPM, and Gateway by
APA
Hi,
Can anyone provide a suggestion to get BitLocker enabled with TPM support on
a Gateway computer? I have Vista RC1 installed on a Gateway M280. The M280
has a Broadcom TPM 1.2 chip that is installed properly according to Device
Manager.
However, the TPM managment console, BitLocker Control Panel applet, and the
"manage-bde.wsf" script will not recongize the chip. All other devices are...

User Account Control by
Ron Ward
Hi,
I'm new to Vista...just started checking it out. One thing I've observed
that I really dislike is the implementation of the User Account Control.
That setting is currently at the computer level and really should be at the
individual user account level. I realize that this setting makes the
computer more secure when enabled, but it's really irritating for a power
user like myself to...

Doesn't this example violate Mandatory Integrity Control? by
Walter Porter
Hello:
Scenario:
1) Launch notepad.exe with High MIC label, create file, close file.
2) Launch notepad.exe with Medium MIC label, edit that same file, save the
changes successfully.
Isn't this a violation of the purpose of mandatory integrity control? A
process with a lower label (Medium) is successfully editing a file created
and saved by another process with a higher label (High)?

Windows Live One Care. by
Oscette
I purchased Window Live One Care from Staples about 2 months ago. I received
and loaded Windows Vista RC1 yesterday. When I try to install the One Care,
it says I need the XP SP2 files. What do I do? I love Vista, but also One
Care.
