Backing up Bitlocker encrypted data by glr
My laptop data is encrypted by Bitlocker. As an FYI, the laptop does not have a TPM chip so I store the key on a flash drive. I wish to backup the data on a WD My Book. I understand that a standard back up will not be encrypted. So at the moment, the backup drives are the weak link in my data security plan. I think I prefer that my backup data also be encrypted by Bitlocker and ideally,...

Can you save a Bitlocker key to a SD Card by glr[_3_]
Trying to install Bitlocker on my Dell XPS M1530. It doesn't have TPM so I plan to store the Bitlocker Key on a USB device. Dell Support tells me my 8 in 1 memory card reader is a USB device. I mention that because I want to save the Bitlocker Key to an SD Card. Easy to pop in / out and easy to carry. Unfortunately, the Bitlocker setup only recognizes a USB thumb drive. Curiously, I can use an...

Does bitlocker work without a TPM module or USB Flash Drive? by [email protected]
I am about to purchase a Dell M1330, which doesnt offer a TPM module. I also don't want to deal with plugging in a USB Flash drive every time I boot up (which could get stolen with a laptop). I have the following questions regarding Bitlocker #1 Can I still use the Bitlocker feature of Windows Vista with a TPM module or USB flash drive? #2 Are there any articles that document how secure...

Enhanced On-Access Anti-Malware Protection stopped working by Carla
Hello everyone My OS is Windows Vista Premium Home Edition 32 Bits. I'm working with this OS since I have bought my recent PC, about one year ago. Besides a good antivirus and firewall always updated and activated, my Windows is also updated. Same thing to Windows Defender. About 15-20 days from now, when I log to my PC as an administrator, it appears, a few minutes later, a message in my...

Different tools for the same memory capture by Neil Jones[_2_]
I have used Mantech's mdd_1.3 and win32dd to capture RAM on my laptop. The output file sizes are different. In real world, how do we decide which tools to use to capture volatile memory? In my test case now, I don't know which tool I should rely on. One other question, what tools are used to analyze volatile images? NJ

File permissions unexpectedly changed by Steve Luttrell
I have Vista Home Premium SP1. Over the past 2 weeks or so I have noticed that several of my applications (e.g. Sibelius, MS Money) have begun to show problems with accessing files, and in the case of MS Money it actually deletes its file on exiting the application. I experimentally tried using "run as administrator" which eliminated a lot (but not all) of these problems, so it seems to be...

Access is denied by Sam Hobbs[_2_]
I am getting a c0000005 (Access is denied) error from a console program after the console program executes. The error dialog appears to be blaming the CLI (the .Net CLI I presume). More specifically, I am trying to use the Netbeans IDE (programming environment) for PHP scripting. It is not a programming problem, however. I am trying to use the option to use PHP as a command-line script. The...

RemoteDesktop: are admin privileges different? by Beemer Biker
NETCOP-DISCLAIMER: yea, sorry I posted in .general first Have run into a strange behavior and am trying to figure out what is happening. If I reboot a home vista 64 system from my office over RDP, the nVidia coprocessor (CUDA object) is no longer recognized and tasks that are supposed to run on it will not start. I have to go home and cycle the power. This does not happen if I am at home and...

Cannot run "Contig" (defrag tool) as Admin on Vista by Neil Jones[_2_]
I have a Vista Ultimate on my system. I want to defrag some specific directories/files, so I have downloaded "Contig" (sysinternals toolset) from the Microsoft site. When I try to run this tool as normal user I got "Access Denied" message. I have logged in as the System Administrator and got the same "Access Denied" message. How can I run the "Contig" tool on Vista? What are the proper...

Security Id's for "Program Files" folders? by Richard B
I had a strange thing happen to me yesterday that got me to investigating. One of my game programs, which I had just finished playing with a couple hours before, refused to start telling me that I did not have permission to start that program. I went to the program files folder to look at the security tab. It was true, my User Id (an Administrator) was not in the list of user names. I was...

Newbie AUC Problem by PT[_2_]
Brand new Vista Ultimate 64 bit user. I try to open the C: Docs and Settings folder, so I can tweak and edit the Start Programs layout. I get an "access denied" message. I'm the sole user on the machine. I was given to understand that this is an AUC problem. I went to the Security Center, and I thought succeeded in turning off AUC. But after a restart, I'm still locked out of Docs and...
