UAC should have been a Business class feature, not for Home Users by JD Wohlever
I hate to say so MS, but your average joe, the person you are making UAC for, is going to do exactly what they are doing, that is turning UAC off. Example, my mother is your basic Internet User. She just graduated from AOL to a normal broadband connection after me telling her for years how much better broadband would be for her. She bought a PC that had Vista Home Premium on it. Suddenly...

Windows cannot find file when clicking on file? by mlsoup
I get the error message when double clicing on misc documents within my folders that says "windows cannot find the specified file, please make sure that you have typed the name correctly and please try again." I can open up any document from within the application itself by going to file/open finding the file and opening it that way. It is extremely random though. It only happens on some...

Is Windows Vista index-based full-text search powerful enough? by Peter Frank
Hi, I have a couple of questions about the new index-based full-text search of Windows Vista. 1) Is it powerful enough to handle huge amounts of data consisting of PDF documents, Word, Excel and Powerpoint files (around 20 GB)? Or would a third-party solution like dtSearch be the better choice? If this is the better choice, can the indexing by Windows Vista be disabled?

Zip files by Waistcoat
Hi all, I've suddenly lost my ability to unzip files. Vista (business) doesn't seem to have an associated program, and I don't know where to find it. Anyone know? I don't really want to shell out 40 smackers for winzip if I don't have to. I was able to decompress when I had XP, anyone know what happened?

lnk file association by Daemonfyre
Long story short, I'm another one of the dozens of people whose shortcuts and start menu files have turned into unassociated .lnk files. I've looked at several other threads and tried the fix that they point to, namely the .reg fix file. However, whenever I try to merge the file I get an error message that reads: Cannot import C:\lnk_vista.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the...

AVI files play no picture, but with sound by Nicholas Hall
I do not know what has happened but when I try to play an AVI file in windows media player I get sound but no picture. The first time I noticed this is when I went to a BBC (UK website) and tried to watch an online program. The program started and I heard sound,... but there was no picture. When I tried to open a local file the same thing happened. If I open the file in the new (BETA) real...

Can I disable "Grouping" in Vista's Windows explorer?? by Bryan
I would like to completely disable the "Group By" and file grouping in Windows Explorer in Vista. I detest this ill-conceived "feature" . I' ve seen articles on how to "reset" the views so they stick and they're only temporary solutions as Vista eventually start grouping again.. I'm **S I C K** of this so-called feature and it does nothing but hamper my work efficiency and lower my...

Windows Vista x64 searches 5 times longer than Windows XP! by Dima[_2_]
Hello! Why does Windows Vista x64 search so long, especially when the progress in the bar is at the end and the ring is rolling (a replacement for the sand glass)? When a search is not "nearly instantaneous" it takes nearly forever. That is, when you ask for an Advanced Search of Computer, the bar first goes half-way across fairly quickly. Then it goes more slowly to about 3/4 of the way,...

Deleting Vista Search Folders by pvc[_2_]
I am hoping to find an automated method for deleting the Vista Search Folders. I tried command line scripts to remove the folder (RMDIR or DELTREE), but I'm not having any luck with the search folders. I am able to delete other folders with a script (like this one): Del C:\Myfolder\*.*.* RMDir C:\Myfolder But I cannot delete a Vista Search Folders like this folder;...

simple question about directory tree by Dr. DOS
In Windows explorer(file manager)left pane (the directory tree) All I want is.... for the left pane/window to show the contents of the C:\drive and what hangs below it, such as the existence of all the subdirectories and D;\, e;\ etc. I do not want to see the useless "My Documents," "printers," "unused desktop shortcuts," etc. and the rest of these irrelevant sub-directories (folders). I do...

Default view of folders reverts back to previous settings. by Jeff Ingram
Hello, The default view of folders sometimes reverts back to previous settings. I've setup a folder with the view that I'd like for all of my folders, with Details, Size, Create Date, & Modified Date (turned off Tag since it's of no use to me whatsoever since I can't use it for MPEGS, AVIs, or Real files) and then clicked Tools/Folder Options, then clicked the View tab and under Folder Views,...
