Can't find files downloaded to desktop.... by
iklein
I’m looking for any suggestions you can offer. I’m new to Vista, but have a
lot of experience with Windows. I’m having a problem that’s really bugging
me. I paid for and downloaded an album from a reputable musical group’s
website (Linkin Park). The download manager asked me where I wanted to
download my files. I chose my desktop. Everything went fine… I watched each
file...

Using internal 300GB HDD as an external HDD for my laptop.? by
GSi-R[_20_]
Hi all, hope everyone is doing good?
Basically, I have a custom built pc back in the UK which I will be
taking apart soon, as Im selling up everything I have back in the UK.
(Moved to Finland last year from UK).
I want to keep my internal 300GB HDD from my custom built PC, and know
I can do this, and also know what case I'm going for too, although it
will be powered independently, with its own...

Finding lost files by
Artist
I turned off my computer without saving the changes to my file over the
previous day. When I turned it on again, only the previousl day's saved
version appeared on the list of files. I looked for an autosaved version,
since I know autosaves take place regularly, but I have been unable to find
autosaved or recovered files using an 'everywhere' advanced search.
I have Windows for Business 2007...

trouble finding Word 2007 docs by
John Myers
I have a problem finding Word 2007 files from the Search field in Windows
Explorer.
Example: I have a file named "test.docx" in "My Documents", and I can see
that file right in the Windows Explorer window. However, if I type, say
".docx", or "test", in the Search field in the top right-hand corner of
Explorer, the search comes up empty. I can, however, get the search function
to find the...

automate indexing service installation in Vista? by
JAG
Does anyone know what's required to automate the installation of the
legacy indexing service (CISVC) in Vista?
In XP/2000 I was able to accomplish this by simply setting some
registry entries, but it appears that this isn't the case in Vista.
After specifying the appropriate registry entries, it seems cisvc.exe
must somehow be extracted because the executable is nowhere to be
found unless I...

Indexing - list of questions by
Julian
1. Where is all the clever syntax for Search described ("from:", "about:",
etc.)
2. What does "Null Filter" mean on a filetype filter mean? What does the
File Properties Filter mean in the context of radio buttons for File
Properties Only/with contents? Example: two extensions: .bin & .nk1 - default
radio for both "Index Properties Only" - but filter for .bin is Null and for
..bk1 is File...

Where is tech support? Favorites problem!! by
haldo206
Microsoft wants $59 to answer this question. I guess this forum is to keep
them from having to pay tech support.
My question, if anyone would be kind enough to answer, is how to fix the
favorites button. When I hit that button in IE it points to a file that
doesn't exist, which is in my iTunes folder for some reason.
I can save favorites, but I can't use them.
HELP PLEASE!

XP Style slow search? by
KilroySmith
OK, I must be missing something obvious...
How do I do an XP style search? You remember, right-click a folder,
click "Search", and have Vista search the selected folder? I've been
unable to find this primitive operation.
I'm willing to give up search control to Vista for local drives, but
indexing our entire network, and each and every USB stick/USB Hard drive
seems, well, silly for the once...

User Folder Icons by
Robbert
Ok I've got this problem:
The User folders, containing documents, pictures, music, video's and stuff
normally normally have nice specific icons for each folder, like most folders
in the pictu
Now, the normal music folder used to be 'music' (red). But I changed it to
'muziek' (blue), because I created 'muziek' in C:\program files\muziek, which
I was used to. But the new muziek folder...

Program starts and then disappears by
Pete
Hi,
All of a sudden some programs start and go away, some others won't even
start.
As an example: I start "Gspot v2.70a", it starts and the progress bar starts
moving to the end; and then Gspot closes.
Some others programs will not even start, I've uninstalled them all and
reinstalled them. I click on the shortcut that the install-program put on
the desktop, nothing!
I click on the *.exe...

SP1 killed DVD backup by
Tony Linguini
After SP1 pushed to 64 bit ultimate, I got an error message when my weekly
backup ran. After much trial and error, I found that the DVD recording
capabilities are gone. CD still works. As a temporary workaround, I
connected an external hard drive until I figure this out. Suggestions are
welcome. Thank you.

"open with..." how to restore defaults? by
DarrenW
Hi, I want to know how I can reset to the default programs for opening a file..
For example, I've got an .sav file from my Halo game folder, and one day I
was just fiddling around with the folders and I accidently clicked it and
chose Adobe Reader as the program.. then I tried WordPad, etc.. - don't know
why I did that. And I don't like it how all my .sav files have the little
WordPad logo on...

File Names Not Sorted Properly In File List by
Mike Brock
When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are
not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure
that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly.
After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu
item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered
this...

Why is the Vista Folder Customization/Templating so FUBAR???? by
Keith Hill [MVP][_2_]
Riddle me this, why does Vista think this folder is of type "Pictures and Videos"?
Whoever implemented this feature needs to be made aware of the annoyance they are causing a lot of people. Where is the button for that "we share your pain electric shock buzzer" cause I want to press it (a lot).
Come'on how hard can this be? How about this as an idea. Don't mess with the view of any of...

up until this week when i downloaded files were large, windows automatically
compressed them, placing them in a folder with a zipper on it. all of a
sudden it does not do that anymore.
that part of vista is not working. my computer is a month old. i understand
that this automatic compression is intrinsic to the vista system and may not
have a file extension.

Problem with hidden files on 2008 Server by
Martin Hart Turner
Hi:
I have installed Windows 2008 and I am connecting to it with WinXP and
Windows Vista.
When I navigate to a folder with SQLServer 2005 data/log files using WinXP I
can see the mdf and ldf files, but when connecting with Vista I can't see
these files.
How can I make these files visible under Vista?
