Troubles with file version in mixed environments: how to disable this function? by Ciegalo
Dear all, I've recently switched to Vista in my company, yet all of my colleagues remain on XP. I'm having quite a lot of troubles with automatic file versions. For instance, we are sharing an excel file that is used as database for a fusion in Word. It used to work perfectly until I realise that Word "sees" an old version of the Excel file, without my latest additions. I've had similar troubles...

Windows Explorer start folder problem by JeffG
Since the last few days, when I start Windows Explorer it starts up in C:\Windows\System32 instead of my local Documents folder. This is also breaking Java programs when bringing up a file selection dialog. This starts in the same folder, and is denied access to list the files in that folder. I proved this by creating a new user. When running Windows Explorer it starts up in the user's...

Vista Home Premium drive map to Server 2003 by trwright
All of my workstations are running WinXP home or pro. All of them have drives mapped to the server. This new machine has Vista Home Premium and I need to map the same drive letters to the server. When I try to map a drive, it asks for a login and password. I did not have to setup a login or password for any of the XPs and don't want to start it because there are too many to keep up...

Removing previous versions of files by rwebcon
::I have a question on previous versions of files in Vista. As you know Vista creates previous versions of files as part of restore points. My question is on deleted files and previous versions. Lets say you have a file which has previous version and you want to delete it from the system and you empty the recycle bin. You never want to restore it. How are files like this removed so they do...

Vanishing files by Seydlitz
Admittedly Newbie question.... I've had Vista for about two days on a brand new PC I tried to save a text file attachment from an email. The file was saved to a subfolder folder of an application in Program Files. I appeared to save correctly, no issues identified. I go to the subfolder to open the file, and it doesn't show up in the subfolder

File Icons in Widows Vista by - R2D2 -
Hi all ... Did not see a post on this on a quick scan of the newsgroup, but was wondering if there is away to change the file icon in Windows Explorer under Vista. From what I have seen in some blogs and different sites, it might require a hack of the registry. I was wondering if there was a 'cleaner' way of modifying a file icon to make it easier to distinguish between different files (of...

Files disappear from Downloads Folder by saroehr
Interesting... When I download files from the internet into my HOME/Downloads folder they don't show up inside Explorer. I have tried using the command prompt but don't see them. However, they do show up occassionally using a File...Open command and the browser java applet plugin can find them so they are inside the folder just hidden in some strange form. Any suggestions on how to...

Hard drive woes by Stephen Anders
Today my HP dv2517 laptop (Vista home premium) tries to check the disk on every boot-up. The check seems to run for a second or two and then hang (no disk access light). I can bypass this sometimes, but its a major hassle. Once booted, the error log shows that there has been one error - NTFS corrupt and unusable. I cannot run chkdsk in the command prompt 'cos I am only a user with admin...

Vista-supported NAS recommendations? by GW
Could anyone recommend a NAS for under $200 that supports Vista? I've looked at three options so far: 1. Maxtor's Shared Storage II 320gb (STM303204SSAB0G-RK / S01R320) 2. LaCie's Ehternet Disk Mini (301137U) 3. Iomega's 500 GB Home Network External Hard Drive (33455) LaCie's and Iomega's list support for Vista OS. Maxtor doesn't specify Windows OS but says "Windows PC". I'm still...

I am setting up 3 computers in my home on a network. I want my family to be able to sign on to any computer on the network and be able to easily access their files. I also need to be able to backup the data for everyone. I have a Maxtor One Touch on the way to use as backup storage. What I want to know is what's the best setup option(s) for this scenario? If someone could point me to an...
