Windows Explorer doesn't refresh on folder shares by Bob
Hi, I notice that if I add or delete files to a folder shared on a server, Vista's Windows Explorer will refresh this information immediately (as it should). But if another workstation should add or delete something from this shared server folder, Vista 's Windows Explorer will not automatically refresh the change. Rather, a manual refresh is necessary. Also, the same thing happens if the...

dreaded spaces in shell special folders by MilesAhead[_4_]
I just found a little tutorial that shows how to open shell special folders from a command prompt. As in C:\start shell:Personal to open the Documents folder. All well and good but naturally there's no example to demonstrate doing the same with a shell folder that has spaces in the name. Example: C:\start shell:Quick Launch gets an error "cannot find shell:Quick"

Vista search - preview pane problem by Tim W[_3_]
The preview pane in Vista search seems to work intermittently. Many times it simply won't give any preview at all, even though it may have previewed that very file just seconds before. This is more likely to happen with pdf files (I have Acrobat Reader 9 installed) than Office docs, but it happens with those too. This problem pretty much makes the preview pane unworkable. Any ideas what...

Vista cannot search for text in files unless file extension is a manually added. by VistaSufferer
My scenario is quite simple. I manage a number of sites that upload their activity log as text files using names like: company1.20080814 company2.20080814 company1.20080815 company2.20080815

Strange behavior in "Recent Docus" folder by rs913
I've been encountering some strange behavior in my Vista "recent Documents" folder ever since the last time I cleared it. Ever since then, it seems to be filling up with every document I've opened since then, but items are not "clearing" as time passes - instead, the list is just growing indefinitely. Also, only the first 15 items in alphabetical order (from that growing list) are shown. Even...

Displaying file times to the second by Ray[_6_]
I'd like to compare the time stamps of two files that were created a few seconds apart. Unfortunately, the Windows Explorer only shows the time to the nearest minute. And the "properties" view is even worse -- it shows "2 hours ago" (it was actually 78 minutes ago). The DIR command also gives time only to the minute. Is there any way to get the file times to the second? The files were...

error setting up program defaults by scr621[_9_]
For some unknown reason out of the blue notepad.exe has set itself up as the default .txt file viewer. I'm trying to change it back to notepad++.exe but it simply will not let me do that. When I get to the part where I click on Notepad++.exe to set it as the default program, nothing happens & nothing changes. The program does not appear in the options. What happened? Anyone know how I can...

Vista corrupted file on usb drive by Bob
I opened a .doc file on my Memorex 128 mb usb drive and got a message that there was a problem. Vista Scandisk came up and asked to scan and fix the usb drive and I clicked yes. It scanned usb drive and all the files were ok except the .doc file that failed to open and a directory of pictures I successfully copied before this. I only want the text off the .doc file and I do not care about...

windows explorer shortcuts by PaulB
They are typically hidden by default. You must have unchecked "hide protected operating system files". These folders are called "Junctions" and are used to allow legacy programs to interface to Vista's file/folder system. -- Paul "Fred" wrote: It seems like there is a duplicate to every directory in windows explorer

Disk Imaging without OS? by phanmo
I'm not sure if this is the best place, please feel free to move this to another thread... I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do a clean install of vista home premium, I've got my data already backed up. What I'm wondering is if there's some way to do a disk image style backup but without the operating system? What I'd like to do is reinstall vista then restore a "disk image" so I can avoid...

iTunes opening windows as 'Small Icons' but want 'List' - how ? by BeachNut
I can see loads of advice on the forum :geek: but not sure which to follow to get the fix I need. Using iTunes 7.7 if I 'Add file to Library' the window opens listing all files in the 'Small Icons' View type, which orders the files horizontally. I want it to open as a 'List' view type so that all files are ordered vertically. If I open the same folder in Explorer it IS opened as a 'List' View...

Vista backup help! by dg175
Hi everybody, I recently formatted and restored my vista home premium system. Before doing so, I made a backup of my files (not complete pc backup) to a network share drive. Now when I try to restore I get the error: The backup file could not be found. Check your hardware configuration or restore from a different backup. (0x8100001A) I did not move my file backup to a new location, and the...

stop displaying "Public Documents" for Documents folder? by David Deley[_2_]
I don't care for the way Vista Windows Explorer sometimes displays "Public Documents", and other times it's just "Documents" (possibly over a network). I never know if I should look in the D's or the P's for the folder. I have to look both places. Is there a way to stop this inconsistency and just always display what the folder actually is?

Folder does not refresh after disbaling auto arrange in list or detail view by kedia_vishal
I followed the steps given by Keith in thread (how to fix FFlags for all folder?, #139488) to disable auto arrange in list or detail view in Windows Vista Explorer. It has caused another issue here. Although autosorting does get disabled, if I copy more than four files in that folder, the files does not show up until I close the folder and then reopen it. Even refreshing the page (pressing F5)...

System Volume Information Files by jswas
I recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium. I Run Nod32 V3 virus software, but find that it does not scan System restore files. I have taken ownership of the folder and sub files but still cannot scan for malware. I used to use XP pro and had no problems scanning the restore files. The message in the Nod32 log file reads "error opening". Any help with this matter would be most welcome. Thanks --
