What are these partitions? by Mark
Using Acronis Disc Director my hard drive seems to be partitioned with two I know about (C:\ drive and D:\ drive) but also two I don't. These two are shown as "unallocated" with a capacity of 126 kB and "FAT16" flagged as a primary drive at 55Mb with 47 free. Additionally I can't seem to allocate the "unallocated" to any other partition. Any thoughts?

Subst oddity with UAC by Keith Hill[_2_]
Why is it that I have to subst drives in both a normal cmd prompt and also an elevated cmd prompt? You'd think that a single subst in either type of cmd prompt would become visible to the other (just as if both prompts were running at the same privilege level)? -- Keith

Death by Briefcase? (Vista "Out of memory") by Julian
Vista Home Premium. Another milestone in Briefcase dysfunctionality. Anyone else had such dire "out of memory" issues - especially in conjunction with the Briefcase - as described below? Yesterday, while attempting a regular update, a Briefcase it complained that despite having 57% of the installed 2GB RAM free there was "not enough memory to view the Update dialog box".

DVD burner incompatible with Vista? by Bill Gaul
Hi - I got an Acer desktop with Vista preinstalled. From day one I have problems trying to back up files on a CD-RW using the Explorer burn option. Ised to be able to right click and send to the E (I have a D partition) drive, but when I go to burn them I get a "format disk" message. I've ruined several disks after choosing either of the format options. Explorer hangs in the "calculating...

Vista won't show file version unless extension is changed to DLL by anon0918
Please try this yourself: rename a DLL to a different extension (such as ..asdf). Watch the Version tab disappear under the file's Properties. If you switch the extension back, suddenly Vista recognizes the version specification. Why is Vista ignoring file versions for custom file extensions?? We deal extensively with clients using older version of our files, so we need to be able to easily...

"Stack By" weird results by Moody Marco
I think the new Vista "Stack By" feature would be very handy and useful, but the problem is it's practically no use to me, as it seems to show up "old" files. For example if I have some .avi files in a folder, then delete them, the next time I use Stack By type on that folder, the 3 old files show up, even though I deleted them. It's also a pain since I like to Stack By "type", but "type"...

can I create a new "kind" of folder with customized column heading by Idaho
I'm having all kinds of problems with the folder types and column headings in Vista. I imported a huge tree of folders from my old computer, and Vista assigned them all different folder types, seemingly at random. I've gone through and customized the folder type along with the column headings I want for a bunch of the folders, but it is a long and tedious job. Is there any way I can...

Vista won't show file version by anon0918
The files in question are actually DLLs, with different extensions. In XP, Windows interpreted the file version fine, but Vista doesn't want to. Do we need to write a DLL that knows how to open that filetype and read the properties? Can you give me any useful links explaining this? Thanks. "zachd " wrote:

I am running Vista Business edition on a dual core Thnkpad X60 with 3Gb RAM. Loaded a CD with a program that I want to install. Tried to right click on the setup.exe file but nothing happens. Tried double clicking on the file to get it to run - still nothing. Attempted to drag and drop to the desktop and received the message "Files on this CD-ROM are read-only. You cannot remove or...

Searching for contents of a file in Vista only occassionally by Tammy
Hi, I have a user who searches for files frequently within Windows Explorer. Sometimes he only wants to search by filename, other times he'd like to search within contents of files. The files can be stored in various folders on various drives. My question is this: is there an easier way to switch between searching for contents vs. filenames other than changing his search options within the...
