pc decided to hide files by
lisa.smith
Hi,
Yesterday my pc took on a life of its own, the majority of desktop stuff
vanished and all files appeared empty. When I looked at the disk space it was
obvious they they must still be there as there was no more free space than
normal. I have manged to get vista to show me the hidden files but some are
still in a translusent type rather than normal solid colour. I have run
defender,...

Expanding folders & files command - gonzo? by
Maria MS
Hi all,
earlier we used to have a command such as
C:\Windows\explorer.exe /n,/e,
and when clicked it would show in the left pane a fully expanded folder, and in the righthand pane
all containing files.
Also the expanded folder would begin to open just under the roof of the Explorerframe, remember?

Backup by
Kim S
Hi...
Tried this question earlier in another group, but didn't get any response.
Please let me know, if the question is unclear....
I've made a full backup of my C: drive, using Vista's backup feature.
I've saved the backup on a local disc, called my E- drive.
Then I have formatted the C-drive, and reinstalled Vista.
I wanted to restore some of the files from the backup, Documents
etc. but now...

Folder & item data not visible by
Maria MS
Just moved from W98SE to Vista Home Premium... major leap.
Tried all settings for Windows Explorer, using the classical view, but cannot detect the old
practical info at the bottom of the frame - in fact there seems to be no bottomborder, the page just
ssems to continue under the taskbar -
e.g. 43 items 2 hidden 3.43 MB This computer
Any clues how to make those elementary data...

Vista Seach locations grayed out... by
Howard Woodard
I've looked through quite a few of these posts but didn't find one close
enough to my issue for me to just add to the thread.
I am either getting a whole list of things that seem to have nothing to do
with my search criteria or I get nothing.
When I look at the indexed location all I see is "Offline Files" and it is
checked. Even though I have over a hundred thousand files in my user...

Registry location for Right Click Start Menu by
mbscjohnp
I had the registry locations in XP of the "Right Click Start Menu" so
I could establish the "Explore" and "Explore All" folder location(s) to
which they
would default, other than the "Start Menu." I am unable to locate the ROOT
location for these entries in Vista, as I wish both to change the default
folder and remove a McAfee "Scan" shortcut that has somehow been added to
this "Right...

Windows Explorer doesn't show files created by other apps by
Tim
I am running a query in a web application and downloading the resulting file
to my desktop. I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic. When downloading using
web app, created new folder on my desktop and stored the file there.
When I go to Windows Explorer, neither the folder nor the file are visible.
However, I can open the "attach file" option in another web app like Gmail,
and can see both...

Can't use a saved-search with Microsoft 'Photos' screenSaver? by
Baffin
I have thousands of photos. I'd like the Photos screenSaver to display from
a SUBSET of those -- a perfect application for a saved-search, no? So I
defined a saved-search that isolates the subset of photos I want (that
worked), and then opened Photos to point it at that saved-search folder --
but (gasp!) Photos doesn't seem to accept or see saved-searches!!
How do I get Photos screensaver...

How can I display multi-phrase saved-search queries? by
Baffin
How does one display the search query associated with a saved-search folder,
when the search has more than one phrase?
Here's what I did (you can too, if you want to reproduce the situation):
1) Open a search
2) Enter a query with multiple phrases, eg., "under:\baffin\photos and
kind:pictures and not foldername:panoramas" (using the language at...

Deleting files on C drive by
donbchbm
There are files I have deleted permanently. When I open my GOM Player, I go
to a pull down menu which I click on "open files". I get a pop up which I
then choose "video files". This then shows me a list of all the vid clips
I've downloaded and already deleted and I can't remove them even when I right
click and delete. They are removed from the choice box but they remain on
the drop down...

Performance issues with Disk Defragmenter by
VistaNewbie
Okay, I give up. I've got a 750 GB partition that I've been defragmenting
for over 24 hours so far - the process is still not complete.
The first time I tried defragmenting, I used the GUI tool at start - all
programs - accessories - system tools and finally
cancelled everything after about 28 hours because it still hadn't finished.
So, about a week later (yesterday morning), I decided to...

Separate partition no longer advisable for user-created files? by
David Newmarch
On my new Vista Home Premium box I was planning to locate my user-created
files (docs, pictures, music, and such) in a separate partition, as was a
pretty straightforward and usual thing to do in XP. But complications soon
emerged in Vista when I began experimenting with relocating personal folders
using Move on the Location tab in Properties view, so I started hunting
around on this forum...

CompressedZip Icon by
Zip Icon
Hello, I've read all of the threads on reassociating .zip files with
zipfixvista.reg. My problem is that I've accidentally associated my zip files
with a music program that I'm currently using. I used the reg key fixer but
the icons are still that of my music program. I uninstalled the program and
re-merged the reg key but the icons are still the same. Does anyone know if
it's possible to...

Folder shortcuts in Vista? by
Jeff Vandervoort
Windows 2000 & XP supported a somewhat obscure feature called Folder
Shortcuts. Since it's a bit of an obscure feature...please let me clarify I
am NOT describing a shortcut to a folder! Unlike a shortcut to a folder,
Windows adds a Folder Shortcut to its namespace. It appears in the "Save In"
dropdown in file dialogs, and in the left pane treeview in Explorer, just
like My Documents, Control...

How do I delete "moved" files? by
Anthony M.
I am running Vista Home Prem and recently purchased a Seagate FreeaAgent Go
drive to use as some extra storage. For some reason I could not (after hours
of help with the Seagate help desk) get My Documents folder to sync. The
folders were there but none of them contained any files.
I moved the My Documents folder directly onto my "C" drive. I cut and
pasted the folder then renamed it. ...
