Slow file copy to USB device by just bob
Hi again, I've got a brand new USB 2.0 Maxtor external drive and Vista reports my speed for copying a folder of about 10,000 files and 36Gb is only 14MB/sec. Why so slow? It's estimating it will take 45 minutes. On XP I could do this in about 15 minutes. This is on a brand new Dell D820 with Vista Ultimate, 3GB of RAM, all ports USB2, both external and internal hard drives are 7200RPM....

Slow move of files on C drive by just bob
When I try to move a large subfolder from one folder to another, Vista seems to stop and think for a while before doing the move. What is it doing? Also when I've tried to to replace a folder with the same name it tries to merge the folders. What is this called and where can I read more about it and maybe turn it off? Thanks, -Bob

Creating and Deleting File Types - Changing Icons by lforbes
Hi, With Windows XP File Type Manager you could delete File Types, create new file types, Set Strings, and change Icons. I found the "Default Programs" in Control Panel in Vista but it doesn't let you do any of those things. I could start hacking the registry but I am pretty annoyed that Microsoft Dumbed Down Windows. For those of us who know what they are doing it is pretty annoying that...

What are the default Vista programs in "Media Center Programs"? by Rick Bywater
I just noticed that in "Start All Programs Accessories Media Center Media Center Programs" I have a shortcut to SiSoftware's Sandra Lite XI.SP1 (that I installed last week). It's weird because the icon for that start menu entry has the green circle windows icon that one sees for Media Center. Sandra Lite does have its own rightful place in my start menu in an SiSoftware folder, so...

How can I get Windows Explorer to.... by Nita Klew
Just curious. Maybe I'm missing something I should know about. Anyone else know of a practical reason for this (withoug getting cranky about it)? "Phil" wrote in message ... You stick to how YOU want Windows Explorer to work, Nina, I'll look after my own.

navigating in windows explorer by Nita Klew
I don't see any URLs in Windows Explorer. A URL looks like this: http://www.someplace.com Are you sure you mean URLs? When you open the Navigation Pane you should see links to commonly-use folders like Documents, Pictures, Public and so forth under the Favorite Links heading. You can make that page taller or shorter by dragging the top bar on the Folder pane just below it. To remove a...

Default Applications on Main Start Menu, How can I remove them? by James L. Williams
I have another issue however I am not sure where to post it. On the start menu, you have default applications and files, however every time I click "Remove From this List" on the default programs and files, they come back after I log off then back onto the user account. Why won't they stay removed? I.E. I want to remove AOL and Windows Media Player from the main Start Menu. So I...

Missing files by eeh
Upgraded my Dell XPS-dual core desktop with Raid-0 HDD to Vista Home-P from XP on 2/28. All went well. Afterward I could access folder with my downloaded work files, location "C:\program files\DL". On 3/2 I ran Vista defrag, which seemed to run 5hrs to defrag 50GB of files. Now, after defrag I'm missing entire folder C:\program files\DL plus downloaded files. Can't access or see them...

Send To by Rich Roddey
In previous versions of Windows there was a neat power toy available called " Send to any folder" that allowed on to right click on a file and dispatch a copy or move it to any folder on my computer. It would be helpful to have that feature with Vista. Rich

Things Missing From Recent Items in the Start Menu by BJLineham
Some files I access and edit regularly will not show up in the recent items section of the start menu. If I go into the "Searches" folder inside my personal folder, then go in to "Recent Documents" some of the files shown appear with a bracketed number after the file name. For example: Software Licensing.xls (48) In this case the file name is "Software Licensing.xls" and the number has

creating files in the system directory by Jeff McKay
I don't understand this statement - if an old application supplies its help in a .hlp file, why do you think there will be a .chm file shipped along with it? Or are you saying that Vista somehow converts .hlp files to .chm? If that is so, why when I try to view old help files, do I get a help box from Vista telling my why I can't view .hlp files? Unable to "Select All" in Explorer (file browsing) by nuge
Hey all - I'm hoping someone can assist me in this terribly annoying glitch I've run into. For some reason, it seems I have lost the ability to multi-select any files anywhere in my system. I can not currently: - Select All (CTRL-A, or via the Edit menu) - Ctrl-click multiple files - Shift-click an array of files - or use hte checkbox option to successfully select more than one file/folder...
