Folder sorting and details? by
magritte
I frequently find myself sorting the contents of a folder by modified
date or size. What I'd like, though, is for these criteria to apply
equally to subfolders and files.
Currently, if I sort by modified date, I'll get a list where all the
folders are at the top (sorted by date) then all the files are at the
bottom (sorted by date). I'd like to see a single list where the folders
and files are...

How to delete system area from backup disk? by
Neil[_4_]
I was installing a new HD in my laptop and used the Seagate Acronis software
to clone the HD to a Maxtor external USB drive. I later figured out that
was the wrong thing to do, I should have (and did) make a drive image on the
external drive and restore it. That worked fine but now my 320GB external
HD is down to 275GB and I can find no way to delete the clone files that I
copied there...

unable to delete files by
Andreas Höfeld
I try to delete four downloaded files from my desktop. Vista (HP) says
another program or process (depending on whether you use Explorer or DOS
prompt to try to delete them) is using them. The tool Unlocker 1.8.6
reports "Drive Access denied".
Any ideas?

User account hidden after ntbackup restore by
bloomsbury
Hi! I'm migrating to a new computer with Vista Home Premium and have somehow
managed to make both my admin account folder and my Document folder to become
hidden in the Explorer window. However, I can access the Document folder by
clicking on the link to it but not through regular file browsing. This is how
it happened:
I used ntbackup to save data on my old XP 2002 machine, then downloaded...

change document view when attaching to email by
bahboo
I've had XP for years and found it easy to use. I've only had Vista for
a couple of weeks and it has been problematic. Some things I can live
with, but this document view is about to drive me insane.
If I click on documents from the menu, I have no problems finding what
I need, but when I am writing an email and click attach, when it opens
my documents they are not organized the same way. When...

'favorites' by
Lisa Hawkins
My Internet Explorer does not 'find' the Favorites. My Favorites fie folder
has not moved and contains files but the I.E. does not 'look' in the correct
location. How do I tell IE where the folder is. (The error message says it
is trying to open a non-existent folder)

Bloat, Hidden Files consuming Disk Space by
Jeff V. Pulver
Dear All:
I performed a Clean Install of Windows Vista Ultimate, on a new computer. I
loaded all of my software in preparation of switching my production system
from WXP to Vista. I then noticed something about the disk space.
I have 232 GB drive and C Properties indicated I was using 69 GB. Looking at
the drive with Windows Explorer (Folder options are set to show all files),
I tag all...

Vista Indexed Search was reset by
JohnGal
To improve file searching, I have added some directories in Windows Vista
Business Index (Control Panel -- Indexing Options). However, I recently
noticed that these directories don't exist any more in the Included Locations
section. The only directories left are the default ones
(Offline Files // Users folder // Start Menu).
Thus, I have to rebuild my Index from scratch... :-(
Does anybody...

Vista won't find a file given a word in the contents by
tvds
It just doesn't work.
I have a simple text file with a certain word in it.
I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it.
Windows 2000 finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc

Can't save changes to windows system file by
Flowerchild
I really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many
times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very
small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get
a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed
the path! Even if I do try to re-type the path, that doesn't help.
Any suggestions???

Files in Pictures folder are on the desktop by
Bob Alexander
I was moving the "pictures" item on the start menu to a folder on my second
disk D. When I closed the folder I found icons for all my picture folders
arranged on the desktop. They are actual folders, not shortcuts. In Windows
Explorer I can see the folders in their actual location on disk D, and also
at the bottom of the left pane. If I delete one from the bottom left pane,
the one in the...

PDF files not being indexed in Vista by
Invicta
Hi
I am using Windows Vista SP1 (32 bit) and have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master
Collection (including Arcobat Professional 8.1.2 and Reader). I believe this
includes the ifilter for searching PDFs.
However, the contents of PDF files are not indexed, only the file name is
indexed
I have tried rebuilding the index but this did not fix the problem. Indexing
service is on for the disk being...

Deleting Vista Search Folders by
pvc[_2_]
I am hoping to find an automated method for deleting the Vista Search
Folders. I tried command line scripts to remove the folder (RMDIR or
DELTREE), but I'm not having any luck with the search folders. I am
able to delete other folders with a script (like this one): Del
C:\Myfolder\*.*.* RMDir C:\Myfolder But I cannot delete a Vista Search

Need to delete a file but Vista does not let me. by
Michael Moser
Occasionally Vista and its permission handling really drives me nuts: I
needed to replace a certain .exe file in a subdirectory of "C:\Program
Files" but for some, to me unexplainable, reason Vista at first did not
let me delete the old version.
The file was owned by "Administrators" of which I am a member. When I
checked "Effective Permissions" of that file for my user-id I had ALL...
